K-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement
The M.Ed. in Reading degree program prepares individuals to become well-prepared literacy teachers. The program is designed to provide three unique foci in graduate coursework: teaching as research, writing as literacy, and serving as professionals dedicated to social justice. Courses integrate these key components and offer students the skills they need to provide leadership, quality instructional literacy strategies, and support services to K-12 schools in the use of reading and related communication systems. The program's late afternoon and evening course schedule allows full-time working professionals to pursue their studies while maintaining a normal work schedule.
The notion of teaching as research connects inquiry as the basic link for helping teachers explore the nature and function of reading in their own schools and in other institutions. The concept of writing as literacy provides an opportunity for teachers to use writing for different purposes and audiences. In addition, the concept of teaching for social justice requires that candidates act in ways that provide equity and access for all learners.
We anticipate that the call for "a qualified teacher in every classroom" from No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation will increase demand for reading specialists in elementary and secondary schools. Schools will need to hire capable reading teachers with a strong knowledge base to fulfill the NCLB goal of achieving improved reading achievement for all students in elementary and secondary classrooms.
The M.Ed. in Reading program covers the knowledge and skills required by the Illinois State Board of Education Content Standards for the Reading Specialist endorsement. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide leadership in the field of reading/literacy instruction.
Our Reading Teacher Endorsement program is for teachers who currently hold a bachelor's degree and a teaching license and would like to become a highly-qualified reading teacher.
