About

Dr. OiYan Poon joined the faculty of the Higher Education program in 2012. In her teaching, Dr. Poon challenges students to critically analyze systems of higher education, student affairs practices, and to understand their power to transform oppressive structures as social justice change agents. Her primary teaching responsibilities for the Higher Education program Organization and Governance in Higher Education, Student Affairs Profession, and Critical Social Theories in Education.

Dr. Poon's research agenda addresses racial inequalities in college access, affirmative action and selective admission policies, and Asian Americans in higher education. A nationally recognized scholar, she received a 2014 Emerging Scholar Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), a 2013 National Distinguished Educator award from the Pacific Education Group's Courageous Conversations Summit, and the ACPA-Asian Pacific American Network's 2008 award for Outstanding Contribution to Asian Pacific Islander & Desi Research. She has also been a featured keynote speaker at the 2014 Association of Jesuit Colleges & University's Conference on Diversity & Equity and the  2013 National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE).
