Proof of English Skills
We want you to succeed in the program. Therefore, we may require a placement test upon arrival and before you register for classes. If your skills do not match the minimum requirements for the ESL program at Loyola, we will release you to transfer to another program in the Chicago area or to a school of your choosing with instruction at the appropriate level where you will be able to make good progress.

What is high-intermediate level English?
High-intermediate level students can engage in typical everyday conversations (e.g. introductions, weather, directions, etc.) They can also discuss concrete topics of interest in several timeframes and are beginning to be comfortable discussing more complex topics and abstract concepts.
They have a good understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. Some may have stronger reading and grammar skills, but weak oral communication skills. Others may be able to converse adequately, but have some difficulty with writing and reading comprehension.
What is high-advanced English?
High-advanced students are skilled in English grammar and vocabulary, can comprehend what they read, are able to produce a sustained, complex and well-developed essay, and have good oral communication skills in all situations.
Some high-advanced students might have very strong reading and grammar skills, but weaker skills in speaking and writing. Other high-advanced students may be able to communicate very well in spoken English but may have greater difficulty with written English or reading. Still others may be well rounded in all skill areas but need further instruction to achieve near-native-speaker fluency.
How can I show proof that I have high-intermediate level (or higher) English?
