Summer in Chicago is a time when students can study in the Intensive English Summer program at Loyola and also enjoy the cultural, social, and recreational opportunities that the city affords. Loyola Beach, for example, is only a five-minute walk from the Lake Shore Campus where Loyola's summer ESL program classes are held.

The ESL summer program offers intensive study of all language skills, with an emphasis on academic preparation. The summer program offers small classes, personalized attention and intensive curriculum.
All students are placed in morning classes according to level. Students select afternoon classes (electives) according to their own interests and goals. Morning classes meet Monday through Friday; afternoon classes meet three afternoons a week and are restricted to full time students unless space permits others to be enrolled.
The morning classes are in two sections: general guidelines in speaking, listening and discussion skills, and in writing, reading and grammar skills.
The afternoon classes focus on course content that is directed toward specific goals: Success in graduate programs and professional life, or success in undergraduate college studies. Throughout the program, ESL faculty place an emphasis on understanding the cultural factors which affect language use and comprehension.
Students who come to the U.S. for the main purpose of studying must get an F-1 visa. International students with an F-1 visa must take the full 10 credit hours of class: Six credits in the morning and four in the afternoon. U.S. citizens, immigrants, and those whose visas permit them to study part-time may take from three to ten credit hours.
