Summer in Chicago: June 30 - August 8, 2008

Six-week Intensive English Program:

Low Advanced to High Advanced Levels

Summer is a time for serious studying, but it's also a time for some relaxation. And after a long Midwestern winter, Chicagoans really enjoy the beautiful, warm summer season. Located in the Rogers Park neighborhood of the North Side of Chicago, Loyola ESL enjoys the privilege of having a real Chicago-neighborhood feel and the advantage of still being a short train or bus ride from downtown Chicago.

The Loyola neighborhood in Rogers Park is bustling with true Chicago life and culture. Surrounding the campus are myriad coffee shops, cafes, book stores, antique shops, restaurants, and markets. Just a few steps off campus is Loyola Beach, a haven of lazy rest and relaxation for college kids and neighborhood locals alike, where friends can gather to bathe in the sun, have a barbecue, or take a dip in the refreshing water of Lake Michigan. Finally, on either side of campus are two El stops ready to whisk you north to the lively Evanston, south to the artsy Lincoln Park neighborhood, or all the way downtown to the heart of the city of Chicago.

Downtown Chicago is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Art Institute of Chicago; Millenium Park, including the Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry; the Field Museum of Natural History; Adler Planetarium; and Shedd Aquarium. In and around the loop are the theater district, with numerous film cinemas, opera houses, and theater houses, as well as parks, old Chicago restaurants, and an array of buildings featuring the classical architectural styles of such world-famous architects as Frank Lloyd Wright.

In the summer, you can enjoy outdoor concerts and events such as:

The top-ranked Chicago Fire soccer team and two major-league baseball teams, the Chicago White Sox (World Series 2005 champions) and the Chicago Cubs, all play within minutes of Loyola's Lake Shore Campus. The Ravinia Festival, summer home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is a train ride away. Students may take advantage of free lawn passes to CSO concerts at Ravinia.

There are almost endless possibilities for entertainment in Chicago with many music performances and festivals in Millennium Park and a number of neighborhood festivals as well. For more information, visit Living in Chicago.
