True to its threefold mission, Loyola University Chicago's Center for Ethics and Social Justice regularly sponsors, hosts and organizes conferences, workshops and talk series on diverse topics of ethics and social justice import.

2008

  • Lebanese Interreligious Dialogue and National Reconciliation After the War - October 31, 2008
    Professor Ziad Fahed is a professor of  sociology and religion at Notre Dame University in Lebanon who has written broadly on such topics as “Religious Coexistence in Lebanon,” “The Face of Violence in Lebanon,” and “Lebanese  National Reconciliation.”  He hosts a weekly television program in Beirut that discusses issues concerning religious pluralism in Lebanon.  Presently, Professor Fahed is in the United States on a Fulbright Fellowship.  Professor Fahed will discuss Lebanon’s efforts toward national reconciliation being made by the different religious and political factions.
  • Ethics Bowl - October 16, 2008
    The Ethics Bowl hosts teams of Loyola students competing in ethics-centered debate concerning a range of ethical issues from case studies.  A panel of judges decides the winner and this competition determines who will move on to represent Loyola in the National Competition.
  • Discussion of the projects underway at the Center for Ethics - September 15, 2008
    Dr. French gave a brief overview of the projects underway at the Center for Ethics: the Ethics Bowl program, the Polis Program, and the upcoming conference, Globalization for the Common Good. Also, Bill indicated that the Center is working with Philosophy about a new undergraduate opportunity, the Bioethics Bowl.
  • The Ethics of Paul Ricoeur - April 7, 2008
    Professor McCarthy was a student and friend of Ricoeur’s.  McCarthy is a widely respected and nationally recognized scholar of constructive theology, hermeneutics, and philosophical theology.   He served as chair of the Theology Department for eight years and is widely appreciated around Loyola for his intelligence, wide-ranging interests, deep kindness, and his sense of humor.
  • The Ethics of Emmanuel Levinas - March 17, 2008
    Professor Perperzak holds the Arthur Schmitt Chair in Philosophy in the Philosophy Department of Loyola University of Chicago.  Dr. Peperzak is known across the world for the excellence of his 25 plus books  written on a wide range of philosophical topics.   He is recognized internationally as one of the world’s foremost experts on the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. He is also much respected and beloved around Loyola for his intelligence, ready smile, his courtesy and sense of humor.

2007

  • Peacemaking in an Age of Terror - March 20-22, 2007
    An international conference on the promotion of peace-making at the national and global level. The conference focused prominently on the challenge of international terrorism and extremist politics, and also emphasized the ongoing significance of peacemaking challenges that lie far apart from responses to terrorist threats.
    An impressive list of speakers participated, including Arun Gandhi, Mark Juergensmeyer, Helen Caldicott, Abdul Rashied Omar, Mohammed Abu-Nimer, Eugene Jarecki, James Carroll and Daniel Berrigan.
    Video recordings and transcripts of the talks will soon be made available. Stay tuned!

  • The IV Biennial Organizational Ethics in Health Care Conference - May 17-19, 2006
    Over the last six years, this conference has acquired national stature as a forum for health care ethics specialists working in organizational ethics within hospitals and health systems and in the academy. The focus of this year's conference was on administrators at the highest level of organizational decision-making, the ethical challenges they face, and the resources available to them for making sound ethical decisions.   • Teen Parents and Their Children: The State's Ethical Responsibilities - May 20, 2005
    Presented by Loyola University of Chicago Center for Ethics and Social Justice and DCFS Office of the Inspector General.
     
  • Catholic Health Care Ethics: Foundations and Applications - March 2005
    This conference brought together leading moral theologicans and health care ethicists to outline the social, anthropological and methodological foundations of Catholic health care ethics, apply conceptual resources to current problems, and confront moral challenges on the horizon for Catholic health care providers.
     
  • A Calling to Justice: An Interdisciplinary Academic Conference Exploring Social Justice in the Professions and Disciplines - February 19, 2005
    A one-day conference exploring on matters related to social justice, with an interdisciplinary emphasis. The conference includes presentations on research related to social justice, an original play (One Small, Illegal Woman), and opportunities to network with others interested in this area.

    Speaker: Jean Bethke Elshtain, Laura Spelman Rocefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago.
  • "Genetics Testing: Are We Ethically Ready?" - April 2003.
    This conference brought together a distinguished group of scientists, ethicists, theologians and legal experts to examine the implications of the "genetics revolution."
  • "Sustaining Hope in These Times" - March 2003
    A Lenten retreat for the Loyola community, conducted by theologican Gustavo Gutierrez, with a special focus on our commitment to social justice in a world of growing disparity and violence.
  • "Nickel and Dimed: On (not) Getting By in America" - March 2003.
    Barbara Ehrenreich, journalist and author, presenting a keynote speech for Women's History Month.

    A four-day educational workshop for dental professionals on the ethical foundations, current issues, and educational strategies related to dental health care.
