EVOKE's Story
EVOKE began in 2000 with a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment. It has since grown to be an integral part of the university community. We started with the goal of increasing awareness of the importance of vocation in people's lives. This goal fit in nicely with the purpose of Jesuit education, which encourages people to pursue their true callings in life.
After initial success during the first five years, particularly around the concept of bringing conversations of vocation and calling to light, EVOKE moved forward with smaller, intentional mentoring communities. In these communities, the critical component of reflection was added to EVOKE's programs. This allowed students to talk about their callings with each other as well as devote time to reflecting on how these callings were driving their lives.
As EVOKE moves from a grant funded program to an instituionalized office of the university, we plan to build on our successes from the past while looking towards including more experiential components and involving even more faculty and staff with our programs. We realize that one of the best ways to discern a calling is to try out different experiences. This is something we will be focusing on more in the coming years.
