Evoke Scholars Requirements & Application
Application Requirements & More Information
The Evoke Scholars program has been established as a result of a generous gift from the Lilly Endowment Inc., an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family -- J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli -- through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company.
The Evoke Scholarship Program recognizes five (5) Loyola University Chicago undergraduate students with a one year scholarship of $2,500 each. Eligible candidates must be students who are actively exploring a career in lay or ordained church ministry. This scholarship is renewable on a competitive basis. Qualified students (PDF) must complete an application form and consent to a personal interview with members of the Evoke staff.

Basic Structure of the Evoke Scholars Program
Scholarship recipients will be required to:
- Complete 150 “discernment hours” in which you interview or shadow those working in ministry, attend conferences related to your potential ministerial interests, and/or complete volunteer work in various ministerial settings over the course of one academic year.
- Meet bi-weekly with other Evoke Scholars in a small faith-sharing group for theological reflection.
- Complete one Evoke Scholars retreat day or weekend.
- Meet at least once a month with a spiritual director for ongoing discernment.
- Participate in two personal interviews with members of the Evoke staff, conducted near the end of the fall and spring terms.
Each Evoke Scholar is responsible to uphold their own commitment to the program. With the help of the Evoke staff, each Scholar will discern the appropriate volunteer placement and will be connected with a spiritual companion that best fits the Scholar. Participation runs from the beginning of the fall semester until the end of the spring semester. For more information, email evoke@luc.edu.
