Loyola's Jesuit Legacy
The fundamental proposition underlying Jesuit education is that faith, knowledge and service are intrinsically related. [This] means that faith, knowledge and service are not three separate and completely independent aspects of education, accidentally or arbitrarily juxtaposed alongside each other, but rather they form a triad in which each term is dynamically related to the others, and any one term is incomplete without the other two. And it is the integration of faith, knowledge and service that makes for true leadership. - Dan Hartnett, S.J., "The Justice Circle" (PDF, Loyola 2000)
Loyola continues the Jesuit Catholic legacy of St. Ignatius Loyola, who believed that it is imperative to act upon what is learned--and to use our values in service to humanity. By engaging students in the community, the Center not only actively promotes our Ignatian tradition but also extends the mission of our Core Curriculum, which strives to build the knowledge, skills, and values that students need for lifelong success and to make a difference as "persons for others."
The programs of the Center for Experiential Learning are part of the continuum of Loyola's involvement in and commitment to the broader community. In addition to the many opportunities provided by the CEL, Loyola students can also get involved in community service, field experiences, and study abroad experiences in cooperation with a wide range of other partners at the university.
