Mach Bands - Each bar of gray looks lighter on the left and darker on the right. This illusion is due to lateral inhibition. Compare the positions of the ganglion-cell receptive-field centers with the corresponding perceived lightness (in the graph.) Click on the Mach Band picture to see it without the receptive fields.
