Burcht te Leyden

Here is the castle as it still appeared in the 1950's. Since then it has undergone reconstruction. The Van Der Nat coat of arm can be seen on the left of the center of the entrance below the fortress. (This photo appears in the book, Kastelen en Adellijke Huizen, Contact Publ., Amsterdam, 1954.) The castle itself is perhaps very ancient. The castle was built in the 12th century, but more interestingly, it occupies the site of the ancient Roman fortification then known as  Lugdunum Batavorum. The castle is a massive circular wall and seems not to have been a place of residence of the feudal lords but rather a place of fortification.
