Readings in Latin Literature I:
Ammianus Marcellinus

Ammianus Marcellinus deserves fame as the last practitioner of the great Roman art of secular historiography. We will read selections of his Res Gestae and, in seminar-style discussions, explore the important dimensions of his literary achievement: later Roman language, history and culture, political machinations, military triumphs and debacles, the challenge of imperial Christianity, and what being Roman could still mean amidst it all.
