Alternative Break Immersions

Immerse yourself in the world...
Immersions are recognized as key experiences of a transformative, Jesuit education-encouraging the integration of faith, knowledge, and service and contributing to the formation of a well-educated solidarity in today’s world. Come serve communities here and abroad during academic breaks through Loyola's Alternative Break Immersion (ABI) program. ABIs provide opportunities for you to expand your learning beyond the classroom. Each ABI involves a combination of direct service and cultural immersion in a host community as well as education around social issues affecting those communities. Through immersions we live simply, build community, keep faith, and do justice, while sharing work and gaining new awareness from our interactions with diverse communities and one another.

View application deadlines and apply online (using your university ID and password) at www.luc.edu/ABIapp. The immersion program is open to all undergraduate students. Space is limited, and a waiting list is typical of each application process. The deadline to apply is October 19, 2012. Faculty, staff, and graduate assistants/interns may participate with a role in co-leading an ABI with a student leader. If you’re interested in applying, contact abi@luc.edu |
Building community is an essential part of the ABI experience, both within your ABI group and with the host community. Participants will, therefore, prepare for their immersion with their group through three to five mandatory meetings. These meetings involve efforts to educate the group about the host community and issues likely to be encountered during immersion |
The Alternative Break Immersion fee covers transportation, lodging, meals, and a donation to the host organization. Limited financial assistance is available, and fundraising ideas are provided for each participant or group. Participants will need money for meals on the road and other personal expense. Costs vary for local, domestic, and international immersions. See the inserts for details. |

Each ABI involves a combination of service and cultural immersion in a host community along with awareness raising around issues of social concern in those communities. The experience of participating in the ABI program is framed according to four primary goals and guiding principles – that we will be living simply, keeping faith, building community and doing justice while sharing work and gaining new awareness from our interactions with diverse communities and one another. If you are interested and would like additional information please contact Patrick Eccles at 773-508-2205 or peccles@luc.edu. The Alternative Break Immersion program is sponsored by Campus Ministry.
