Dear IFMS Students,
Welcome to the first IFMS Newsletter. It is my plan to post our newsletter on our website on a bi-monthly basis during the regular academic year. Everyone on the IFMS email group will be sent a notice and a link to the newsletters as they are posted. The purpose of the Newsletter is to provide you information about on and off campus events related to film. It will regularly contain information about film festivals, film screenings, lectures and workshops. I will post announcements about internships and job opportunities in the IFMS Newsletter when then come to me. The IFMS Newsletter also will provide a forum for you to post announcements as well. If you have something you want to share with your fellow IFMS students, including pictures, simply send the information to sgabel1@luc.edu as an attached document and I will include in the next volume. I’d like to see a section of the newsletter that contains reviews of films and other articles written by you, an IFMS Critics Corner if you will. So don’t be shy, send your reviews of films you see to the address above and they will be included in the newsletter.
The IFMS Newsletter would not have been possible if it weren’t for the efforts of DFPA Office Assistant, Marta Wasko and Visual Communication major, Celina Maggi, so please join me in thanking them for all their efforts. I look forward to getting your postings, pictures and film reviews. Enjoy.

Gene Siskel Film Center presents French New Wave-inspired movie "July Rain"
As part of its "Envisioning Russia" series with co-curator Alla Verlotsky in person
JULY RAIN (IYULSKIY DOZHD) 1966, Marlen Khutsiyev, Russia, 109 min., 35mm, with Yevgeniya Uralova, Aleksandr Belyavsky
The French New Wave had an impact on Russian cinema, most memorably in this freewheeling yet thoughtful portrait of an uncertain generation, suspended between the Stalinist past and the tentative thaw of the 1960s. Lena is headed toward marriage with her longtime boyfriend, but an encounter with a passing stranger leads her to reconsider her future. Beautifully photographed, JULY RAIN is a lyrical snapshot of Moscow--its streets, its faces, its climates.
In Russian with English subtitles.
Alla Verlotsky, head of Seagull Films and co-curator of the "Envisioning Russia" series, will be present for audience discussion at the Friday, October 24 screening.
About the series: "Envisioning Russia" (through October 30) celebrates the centenary of "serious film production" in Russia, concentrating on Mosfilm, the country's most powerful and productive film studio. The series' films in October range from the silent era to the first years of perestroika.

Video Contest
Online Video Contest Offers a Creative Way to Take Action on Migration
Prizes Offered for Videos Incorporating Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration
Washington, D.C. - The Jesuit Conference of the Society of Jesus in the United States and Justice for Immigrants have partnered to invite people to put their stories, reflections and ideas about migration on video by participating in a contest about immigration that runs through Jan. 12, 2009.
“While the United States government has failed to fix our broken immigration system, we want to hear from people whose families and communities are grappling with the issue right now,” said Jill Marie Gerschutz, migration policy director for the Jesuit Conference. “What is the reality for migrants in the U.S. today? This video contest is an opportunity for people to pick up a camera and add their voices to the immigration debate.”
Two winning videos will be selected that tell non-partisan stories about the migration realities of their families and communities. All videos will be required to include aspects of Catholic Social Teaching on migration and should be between three to seven minutes in length. Criteria such as creativity, quality of the video and appropriateness for the Church audience will be considered in judging.
First prize winners will receive a free flight, registration and lodging to the Ignatian Family Teach-In on Immigration from March 13-16, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Winners will present their videos at the conference and will have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a social media video producer. The winning film will also be considered for use in the Justice for Immigrants campaign – the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform.
Entries should be posted on YouTube.com with the link to the submission, name, school or parish affiliation, email address, phone number and home address to jfivideo@jesuit.org no later than Jan. 12, 2009. Individuals from across the U.S. will be allowed to weigh in by voting electronically via the Justice for Immigrants website during the week of Jan. 15 – 23, 2009.
