FACHEX and Tuition Exchange Program (TEP) at Loyola University Chicago

FACHEX and TEP are undergraduate tuition remission options that allow dependents eligible for tuition benefits at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) to apply for the same benefits at participating Jesuit (through FACHEX) or other (through Tuition Exchange) host institutions (should the student meet the hosting institution's requirements for FACHEX and TEP applicants, and there is space available). It is important to note that FACHEX and TEP awards tend to be extremely limited in number and highly competitive in terms of selectivity. Therefore, there are NO guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the FACHEX or TEP benefit at the institution of their choice.

What is FACHEX?
Established by the Conference of Academic Vice Presidents of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in 1971, FACHEX is an acronym for Faculty and Staff Children Exchange. Twenty-six Jesuit universities participate in the FACHEX program (Georgetown University is the only U.S. AJCU school not participating).

What is Tuition Exchange?
Tuition Exchange is a reciprocal scholarship opportunity for the child dependents of eligible faculty and staff at all Tuition Exchange member schools. Membership currently includes more than 660 institutions, ranging in size from 250 to 50,000 students and representing 47 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and several other countries.

View the list of participating institutions under the "Families" tab on the Tuition Exchange website.

Questions?
LUC's FACHEX and Tuition Exchange liaison officer is Tobyn Friar, Assistant Vice President. All questions about these programs can be directed to his attention by emailing tfriar@luc.edu.

Dependent Selection Eligibility
The home institution determines eligibility requirements. The general principle is if the home institution grants a tuition remission benefit to the child of a faculty or staff member, then the child is eligible to apply for a possible FACHEX or TEP award at the participating institution(s) of their choice, by being certified as FACHEX/TEP eligible by their home institution. Each institution sets their own rules about how students are selected for a FACHEX/TEP award, and it is the student's responsibility to research what is required and follow any applicable deadlines/policies. Participating schools use academic achievement as one of several determining factors in FACHEX/TEP award selection, and most will only consider incoming first-year applicants. FACHEX/TEP awards are NOT transferrable between participating institutions.

Availability of FACHEX/TEP
Each participating institution determines the number of FACHEX/TEP awards it will grant to incoming students each year, as well as the selection procedure at that institution. Generally, these positions are extremely limited in number, hence highly competitive. As stated above, there are no guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the FACHEX/TEP benefit at the institution of their choice. As both FACHEX and TEP are exchange programs, participating institutions are required to maintain a balance of imported and exported students, which results in the number of awards available changing from year to year.

FACHEX and TEP Application Process

Eligible Employees of LUC

  • All LUC employees must have completed at least one year of continuous full-time employment to be considered eligible to apply for FACHEX/TEP at other participating institutions.
  • If you are only applying for FACHEX eligible schools, you must complete and submit the 2024-2025 FACHEX Application
  • If you are only applying for TEP eligible schools, you must complete and submit the 2024-2025 TEP Application
  • If you are interest in appling for both FACHEX and TEP, you must complete and submit both applications.
  • All certification request(s) are due by by December 1 (Some institutions may have earlier deadline for submitting certification. It is up to the family to meet any appropriate deadline at other institutions).
  • Email your completed application(s) to Tobyn Friar, Assistant Vice President, at tfriar@luc.edu.
  • Not all FACHEX schools participate in TEP. You must list FACHEX institution(s) on the TEP application for additional consideration. The submission of one application, e.g. FACHEX, does not mean you will also be considered for TEP. Even if the FACHEX school also participates in TEP, you must submit a FACHEX and TEP application for additional consideration.
  • LUC restricts the selection of TEP institutions to a maximum of ten (10) on the application.
  • There is no restriction to the number of AJCU institutions you may select on the FACHEX application.
  • One eligibility is confirmed with Human Resources, your certification will be submitted electronically to all institutions selected
(Student and her/his sponsoring parent will receive an automated message from Tuition Exchange (whether for FACHEX or TEP or both), confirming the schools to which certification was submitted. Tuition Exchange oversees the administrative functions of these programs and is not involved in the awarding of scholarships by individual institutions.)
  • Submitting a FACHEX/TEP application does not qualify for you admission, nor does your offer of admissions mean an automatic FACHEX/TEP award.
  • Start to become familiar with additional eligibility and selection requirements/criteria at the selected institutions. As an example, some institutions require the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • LUC does not make recommendations nor are we involved with the selection process for other institutions.
  • If a FACHEX/TEP award is extended, please notify the awarding institution as soon as possible of your decision to accept of decline the award. You are NOT required to accept or decline the award until the May 1 deposit deadline. If an institution is telling you differently, please email FACHEX/TEP liaison (Tobyn Friar) as this is not allowed under governing rules.

Employees at Eligible External Institutions

  • Obtain certification for your eligibility for FACHE/TEP from your institution. Parents/legal guardians must make a request from their home institution FACHEX/TEP coordinator/representative to indicate to the FACHEX/TEP representative at Loyola University Chicago that the dependent is eligible and wishes to apply for the FACHEX benefit at Loyola University Chicago.
  • Apply early for admission to Loyola University Chicago before you can be considered for the FACHEX/TEP benefit. FACHEX/TEP is awarded on a competitive basis and is merit based. Decisions for these awards are based entirely on the student’s application to Loyola University Chicago. Please keep in mind that FACHEX/TEP award certification does not qualify you for admission, nor does your offer of admission mean an automatic FACHEX award.
  • The deadline for consideration for the FACHEX/TEP benefit requires that the student be admitted to Loyola University Chicago by February 1.
  • Initial FACHEX/TEP award selections will be made by the middle of February via email to the student and parent/legal guardian.
  • LUC keeps an automatic waitlist and you will be considered for a FACHEX/TEP award should an opening occur. If a student wishes to withdrawal their application from Loyola, the student will be removed from the waitlist and will not be considered for FACHEX/TEP should an opening occur.
  • Students are not required to accept/decline the FACHEX/TEP awards until the May 1 deposit deadline. We strongly encourage students to confirm their acceptance and make their deposit or decline the FACHEX/TEP award prior to the May 1 deposit deadline so LUC can offer awards to other eligible students from the waitlist.
  • After May 1, if an offer was made to a student who did not deposit, the FACHEX/TEP offer will be rescinded and offered to an eligible student from the waitlist who did make an enrollment deposit.
