ACLS Medical Training Scholarship Program

You are already dedicating your life to helping those in need. Why not do something to help yourself?  We invite you to enter the ACLS Medical Training Scholarship Program. We will select one top award winner who will receive a $1,000 unrestricted scholarship (unrestricted means you can buy pizza with the award instead of books if you want—the check is in your name).  The winning essay will be posted on ACLSMedicalTraining.com along with the second and third best essays. ACLS Medical Training is interested in hearing how you think about providing emergency medical care. You are entering a profession in which you may be called upon to provide basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, or pediatric advanced life support. Are you excited? Is this scary? How will you handle the situation when the time comes? If you have  already performed lifesaving techniques, what was it like? Did you use the skills you were taught? There are no correct answers—we are looking for honest, compelling essays.

What do I write about?

Write an essay, between 500 and 1000 words, on one the following topics:

  1. If you have assisted someone in a life support situation, describe your role in the process, the emotions or feelings that you experienced, and how the situation was resolved.

The Future of Technology Scholarship by Vandelay Web

The founders of Vandelay Web are big proponents of education. Regardless of what any politician tells you, education drives the American economy. There is no better way to achieve your dreams and propel your life forward than through higher education.
Unfortunately, college costs have rocketed through the stratosphere, running 2 1/2 times the rate of inflation. According to Forbes, the same college education that cost you $10,000 in 1982 will cost you $59,800 today. Vandelay Web wants to help.

For those high school seniors and students currently enrolled in college in the United States and Canada, we are offering two (2) $1000 scholarships for a pair of winners for our Future of Technology essay competition. So what exactly is the Future of Technology? That’s what we want you to tell us.

We are a year away from the future the 1989 motion picture Back to the Future II promised, yet we still don’t have flying cars or hoverboards. The film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, was peering 26 years into the future so we thought it would be an interesting exercise to give this concept a reload. Where will technology take us in the year 2040. Will driverless cars blanket the highways? Will a desktop computer be good for anything more than a doorstop? Will our homes become one giant iPad?

In 1000 to 2000 words, paint a picture of the world we inhabit in 2040 and how technology has fundamentally changed our lives. Tap into your creativity and use your imagination to construct the landscape of this mythical future. Take chances with your futuristic design but ultimately stay firmly rooted in the science and trends unfolding within technology today.

Jan Egerton and Don Smitley Mesothelioma Scholarship

MesotheliomaHelp is pleased to announce the “Jan Egerton and Don Smitley Mesothelioma Scholarship.” We are proud to offer ten (10) scholarships in the names of these two mesothelioma warriors.

Jan Egerton battled mesothelioma for over 10 years and during that time she dedicated her life to raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos and to championing the researchers to continue to focus on finding a cure and new treatments for the cancer. Jan’s husband said, “I know Jan would be delighted to have this accolade, and I would be honoured for you to use Jan’s name. This is a legacy of which she would be proud.” Jan was one of last year’s judges.

Don Smitley spent his days enjoying time with his family, his dog, Charley, and playing in his bluegrass band, The Dunbar Boys. No one ever heard Don complain or wonder, “Why me?” while he fought mesothelioma. But everyone that knew him would say that faith and a positive attitude carried him through each day. Don’s daughter, Jennifer Gelsick, chronicled her family’s journey during mesothelioma, and now discusses life after losing a loved one to mesothelioma through her blog. “We are so honored to have Dad’s name on the scholarship. It’s such a perfect way to remember and honor him,” said Jennifer. Jennifer will be one of the essay judges this year.

The scholarship is available to students in colleges and universities throughout the United States. Our goal is to help the educational efforts of students while raising awareness of mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos. Mesothelioma is a disease that affects men and women – both young and old.

Each winner of this essay contest will be awarded a check from the law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP. These funds must be used to pay for college tuition and / or education-related expenses.

One (1) essay per student is allowed.

Additional information can be found at www.mesotheliomahelp.org/scholarship-contest/.

2015 Michigan Auto Law Car Accident Injury Survivor Scholarship

Our Michigan auto accident law firm is offering an annual scholarship for college students who were victims of car accidents earlier in their lives and who have overcome their injuries.

We understand how difficult it can be to recover after a serious injury. Our attorneys have been helping people injured in auto accidents for more than 50 years, and want to lend a hand to those who have survived serious crashes and who are demonstrating resolve and determination to rebuild their lives.

We also want to recognize individual acts of heroism and hard work. Our Car Accident Injury Survivor Scholarship serves as an important reminder that each and every person injured in an auto accident is a person, not a number or a claim. Today, most of the insurance industry uses injury claims software that dehumanizes people by putting a dollar value on a case. When personal injuries and pain and suffering are given average dollar settlement values, we lose sight of what it means when someone is hurt in a serious crash and how drastically a life can be changed.

Our hope is that by recognizing outstanding young people who have overcome serious injury, we can remind everyone that car accident injury survivors are people.

Our annual scholarship of $500 will be awarded to two applicants in 2015.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Applicants must:

Selection is based on the overall strength of the application and how that applicant has overcome the challenges he or she has faced from being injured in a car accident.

The Reeves Law Group Scholarship Contest

Our law firm specializes in representing victims of accidents and other tragic circumstances. As lawyers, we feel fortunate to be advocates in the justice system for those who have no voice of their own. Helping people in need by lending them our expertise and resources is one of our greatest rewards. However, being a lawyer is not a requirement for standing up and fighting for the rights of those who have been victimized. We are in fact looking for students who have made significant contributions by helping those who have met with misfortune in their lives.

For this, our first annual scholarship contest, we want to hear from students who have helped in significant ways individuals or groups who have been in dire need of rescue or other assistance. The gestures may involve tending to individuals at a hospice, finding shelter, food and other necessities for homeless or destitute individuals, or fundraising on their behalf. These are just examples. We welcome hearing about your experience, which may involve other circumstances and acts of compassion, commitment and courage.

Please tell us about your experience helping individuals in your community who could not help themselves, and how it has impacted your life and their lives. The student who submits the most inspiring story will be awarded $1,000 to be invested in his or her educational costs.

Who: The contest is open to both high school seniors who are looking to enter college at the start of the next school year, as well as students currently enrolled in a college or university.

What: We want to hear about a time that you stood up for someone who could not stand-up for himself or herself, and how that experience has impacted your life and the lives of the person or persons you may have helped.

According to the National Center for Employee Ownership, there were approximately 10,900 Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) in the United States at the end of 2011. In 1998, there were approximately 11,000. Although the assets held in ESOP plans have increased significantly over that time period, the number of plans has remained stagnant.

During the Great Recession, non-ESOP companies laid off employees at a rate greater than 12%, while ESOP companies laid off employees at a rate of less than 3%. Because employees of ESOP companies were four times more likely to retain jobs during the Great Recession, the Federal government recognized savings of over $14 billion in 2010 compared to tax payments foregone by laid off employees of conventionally owned companies. (Data source: 2010 General Social Survey) So why aren’t there more ESOP companies in the U.S.?

What is the future of employee ownership in America, and how can we broaden its reach?
