Recognition Awards & Initiatives
ROSALLIE RUIZ STAR AWARD
The Financial Services Quarterly Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award was developed by the Finance Recognition Committee as a peer recognition program that seeks to acknowledge individual Division staff members who meet the following criteria:
- Service Oriented - provides exemplary service, to both internal and external customers
- Team Player - works well with others and makes significant contributions to the department
- Always - consistent, dependable and reliable
- Raising the bar - exhibits innovation, initiative, and integrity in implementing ideas
All regular Financial Services Division staff members, full and part-time (20+ hours per week) are eligible to be nominated for the Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award, provided that they are on non-probationary status and in good standing with his/her respective department and University at the time of nomination.
As a peer recognition initiative, anyone may nominate themselves or a co-worker for the Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award. Nominations will be accepted until the end of each fiscal quarter, or on September 30th, December 31st, March 31st and June 30th.
Nominations may be submitted via the online nomination form, via an email to Financenewsletter@luc.edu, or by filling out the form attached to the Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award ballot box located in each of the Division areas. All nominations should include specific, substantial, and current examples of the staff member's achievements and contributions that reflect the criteria and attributes of the Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award.
Determining the Department Nominees
At the end of the nomination period, Committee representatives from each area tally the ballots received. The employee with the most ballots is selected as the department nominee and a review is conducted to confirm that the employee meets all eligibility requirements. In the event of a tie, the full Committee reviews and scores the ballots.
Scores are based on a qualitative review of the ballots, allowing up to 5 points per category (Service Oriented, Team Player, Always, Raising the Bar). An average score for each employee is then computed. The employee with the highest average score is put forth as the department nominee after verifying this employee is in good standing with his/her respective department and the University. To avoid possible conflicts of interest, any Finance Recognition Committee members who are nominated will be excluded from voting.
Determining the STAR Award Recipient
The entire Committee reviews and scores the ballots of each department nominee. Scores are based on a qualitative review of the ballots, providing up to 5 points per category (Service Oriented, Team Player, Always, Raising the Bar) for a total possible score of 20 points. An average score is then computed for each nominee. The department nominee with the highest score is selected as the Rosallie Ruiz STAR Award recipient for that quarter. To avoid possible conflicts of interest, any Finance Recognition Committee members who are nominated will be excluded from voting.
THE RED STAPLER AWARD
The Financial Services Quarterly Red Stapler Award was developed by the Finance Recognition Committee as a means of recognizing managers who “hold things together” – literally and figuratively. This award is intended to acknowledge a manager within the Division who embodies reliability, collaboration, flexibility and recognizes the value of others.
Any manager within the Financial Services Division is eligible for recognition by the Red Stapler Award, provided that they are on non-probationary status and in good standing with his/her respective department and University.
Any member of the Financial Services Division can submit suggestions for the recipient of the Red Stapler Award. The Finance Recognition Committee then reviews and selects the quarterly recipient as a unified Committee.
THE LAIRD CUP
The Laird Cup was developed by the Finance Recognition Committee in an effort to recognize the achievements of whole departments within the Financial Services Division. The Laird Cup is named in honor of Bill Laird (our current CFO), and symbolizes the collaborative and committed efforts of each department in the Division which strive to embody Bill’s characteristics of hard work, intelligence, honesty, compassion, and unity – characteristics which we hope to achieve always.
The Laird Cup has the names of each department engraved on it, reminding us that we are all part of the greater Division. And, that together we are able to meet – and exceed – the goals of the Division, and the University.
At the time of presentation (see below), the Laird Cup holds a special treat for the recipient department.
Beginning with the photo taken at the Quarterly Division Meeting, each department with the Cup is encouraged to take photos of the Laird Cup in the office, as part of their daily work, or special events such as birthday or holiday parties. All photos should then be submitted to the Finance Recognition Committee.
Each area within the Division (listed previously) is eligible for recognition. The Laird Cup will be presented quarterly at the Finance Division Meeting, with the recipient department selected at random by the Committee. The Laird Cup will remain with the recipient department until the next Finance Division Meeting at which time it will be presented to the next department.
At each Quarterly Division Meeting, the Laird Cup will be presented. The incumbent department will bring the Cup forward, gathering for a final photo opportunity with the Cup. The department receiving the Laird Cup will then be named, and gather for the official “hand-off” and first photo opportunity with the Laird Cup.
As stated previously, following this initial photo, the department holding the Laird Cup is encouraged to take photos of themselves with the Cup. All photos should be submitted to the Finance Recognition Committee.
