Academics

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts offers coursework in Art History, Dance, Music, Musical Theatre, Studio Art, Theatre and Visual Communication. Students can choose a course of study from any of our 7 different majors or 10 different minors or simply choose to explore a class in the art that interests them. As an exclusively undergraduate liberal arts program, our courses are open to all Loyola students and require no audition or portfolio review for admittance into our programs. However several of our classes require the completion of pre-requisite courses and a few require placement auditions to assure students are placed in classes appropriate to their skill level. The DFPA also offers a certificate in Graphic Design for non-degree seeking students.
- Dance
Minor in DanceDance has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years. People dance to show reverence, joy, sorrow and thanks. The study of dance strengthens the body and sharpens the mind. It solidifies fellowship and illuminates the human spirit.
Loyola University Chicago’s new dance minor is based solidly in the integration of dance as an art form within a liberal arts curriculum. Courses are designed to link the development of a dancer’s artistic skills with the theory and technique of analysis, problem solving, critical thinking and cultural diversity.
The dance minor promotes the development of artistry through the performance of both contemporary and historical repertory. It is firmly grounded in solid classical dance pedagogy and explores the historical and social ramifications of dance in a variety of cultures. Working Chicago dance professionals teach courses, and students gain exposure to the vibrant Chicago dance community by attending performances given by world-class companies, including Hubbard Street Dance and the Joffrey Ballet. The program includes studio technique courses in ballet, modern and jazz, and foundational courses in dance history, pedagogy and theory.

Concert Attendance
All Music majors must attend four (4) Loyola concerts each semester, other than one in wchich they are performing. The programs from the concert(s) must be signed by one of the performers or an attending faculty member. The program is then submitted to Marta Wasko, DFPA Office Assistantm, with the student's name clearly marked on the program.
Applied Music
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Music Division, is in the process of revising procedures and it is also moving towards a merit system whereby decisions regarding students' applied lessons will be based on students' performance. It is with this in mind that we have developed a new set of guidelines for applied instruction in instrumental music.
New Guidelines for Applied Music Instruction:
1. Instrumental Juries at the end of the Fall 2008 semester will be used to rank all
students taking private lessons in an instrument.
2. Distribution of private lessons for the following semester of Spring 2009 will be
decided based on that ranking.
3. All incoming students continue to audition as before.
4. Honors Recital counts as a jury.
5. Priority will be given to the top ranking students in each instrumental category.
6. There is now a limit of one private lesson per semester per student unless
otherwise approved by Music Director.
Registration for applied music instruction is by application only.
Minor in Music
A total of 21 credit hours are required for the minor in Music. Requirements include 2 credit hours of musicianship skill development, 6 credit hours of music theory, 6 credit hours of music history, 3 credit hours of applied music, 3 credit hours of ensemble music and 1 additional credit hour of either applied or ensemble music.

- Musical Theatre
We offer a full array of classes in Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance. We also offer specialized classes in World Dance, such as African Dance and classes in American forms of dance such as Tap. The Musical Theatre Minor curriculum provides theatre, music and dance students a cross-disciplinary program that coupled with their major, prepare them for working in the musical theatre genre within the demands of a liberal arts education.
The three tracks of the musical theatre minor require courses in the two performing art forms in which they are not majoring and a capstone course in musical theatre repertoire. The capstone course is both a history and performance course where students study the history of musical theatre and are given performance instruction related to each genre.
A total of 21 credit hours are required for the minor in Musical Theatre. The Musical Theatre minor is coupled with a major in either Music or Theatre. Students follow the musical theatre minor track that compliments their major. The minor culminates in a public showcase from the work developed in the Musical Theatre Repertoire (DFPA 374).
