Enroll in Fall Semester Service-Learning Courses

Learn about the service-learning courses offered for Fall 2008. These courses allow you to explore the connections between lessons learned in the classroom and the resources and needs of the greater Chicago community. • Mentor a middle-school student through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and learn about mentoring and positive youth development (SOWK 361).
    • Explore the philosophy of aesthetics while compiling the memoirs of the retired sisters in the Wright Hall community (PHIL 177/PHIL 310).
    • Discover how to convert waste vegetable oil from Loyola kitchens into biodiesel and then teach high-school science students how to repeat the process at their schools (STEP: Biodiesel).

    Protect Yourself from Bike Theft

As the weather warms up, more students rely on bicycles as a method of transportation. Avoid being a victim of bike theft by following these safety tips:

    • Don't place your bike lock close to the ground where a thief can easily smash it with a hammer.
    • Secure your bike to bike racks only.
    • Use a U-Lock with a flat key to secure the frame of your bike to the bike rack, and also secure a tire if possible. Avoid using Kryptonite locks, as they are vulnerable to picking.
    • In addition to the U-Lock, also use a cable lock to secure the bike frame and tire to the bike rack. Two bike locks are better than one!
    • Record your bike's make, model and serial number. If your bike is stolen, you'll have a better chance of retrieving it with this information on hand.
    • Register your bike with Loyola Campus Safety and the Chicago Police Department.
