Sign Up for Loyola Alert
Register for the new Loyola Alert, a special service that provides personal notifications to members of the Loyola community in the event of potentially life-threatening emergencies. Loyola Alert will send brief voice and/or text messages to personal cell phones, land lines and e-mail addresses that are registered to receive this special service. (Note that emergency messages are automatically sent to all LUC e-mail addresses and campus phone numbers; no registration is required to receive these basic communications.) Examples of emergencies during which Loyola Alert may be used include, but are not limited to: barricade/hostage incident, widespread and threatening weather incidents, national civil emergencies, terrorist or other violent acts, and health emergencies as ordered by public health authorities. Students should register for Loyola Alert at: LUC.edu/alert.
Meet the Late/Change Registration Deadline
The last day of late/change registration is Monday, January 21. The Office of Academic Advising and Services (OAAS) will be closed January 21 is observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. To add or drop a class, log into your LOCUS account. If you have any questions and need to speak with an academic advisor, visit OAAS in the Sullivan Center for Student Services, Room 260, on Friday, January 18, or Tuesday, January 22. Note Shuttle and 8-Ride Service Schedule
No shuttle bus service is offered on January 21 because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Shuttle service will resume normal operating hours on January 22.
Loyola's shuttle service is supplemental to the CTA. If shuttle lines are long, use alternate means of transportation:
- Red Line El from Loyola Station to Chicago Station or toward the Loop. Available 24/7.
- Bus 147 Outer Drive Express to Michigan/ Congress. Buses run every 5 - 10 minutes. Pick-ups are at the Loyola Red Line Station and on Sheridan Road in front of Simpson and at Kenmore; Water Tower Campus drop-offs are at Michigan and Pearson.
- Weekdays: 4:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
- Saturdays: 5:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
- Sundays: 7:10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
The 8-Ride Program provides free transportation to and from the Lake Shore Campus and off-campus student residences in the surrounding Rogers Park area. (For a map of specific 8-Ride boundaries, visit: LUC.edu/transportation/8ride.shtml.) 8-Ride is available from 6:30 p.m. - 2:15 a.m., seven days a week, during the regular academic year when classes are in session. The 8-Ride Program is for your protection and safety. You may transport as much luggage as you can fit on your lap. Transporting alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited. You must show a valid Loyola Campus Card (student I.D.) to the driver in order to use the 8-Ride service.

Celebrate Safely Over the Holiday Weekend
Loyola's Safety Net Coalition encourages students to make smart decisions about drinking over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. The best way to avoid dangerous situations is not to drink. If you are under 21 years of age, drinking is illegal. If you do decide to drink, follow these tips to help stay safe:
- Limit yourself to one drink per hour.
- Avoid drinking games.
- Make sure no one goes to or from a party alone.
- Never drink and drive, and always carry extra money for cab fare.
- Get a new beverage if you leave yours unattended or aren't sure which drink is yours.

Be Aware of a Scheduled Internet Outage
Internet access at Loyola will be unavailable intermittently January 21 between 12:01 a.m. - 6 a.m. because of network maintenance. Commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. at a prayer luncheon on January 22 from 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in Kasbeer Hall. The event will feature performances by the Seton Academy Gospel Choir and Band. No RSVP is required, and admission to the luncheon is free. Lecture and Award Ceremony
Go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and Amaker Award presentation on January 23 at 5 p.m. in Kasbeer Hall. Keynote speaker David Hall, law professor and former provost at Northeastern University, will present "In Times Like These, We Need a King: A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King." After the lecture, the Amaker Award of Excellence will be presented to Law School Dean Emerita Nina S. Appel. A reception will follow the award ceremony. Celebration with Judge Mathis
Attend the Dreaming of Justice: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on January 23 at 5:15 p.m. in Galvin Auditorium. The event will feature guest speaker Judge Greg Mathis, star of the television show Judge Mathis. Mathis is a former street youth and high-school dropout whose misbehavior eventually brought him before a judge. The judge ordered Mathis to get a GED or face jail time. Mathis obtained his GED and went on to become a committed civil rights activist, public servant and the youngest elected judge in the state of Michigan. Documentary Film Screening
Join President Garanzini and film director and writer Robin Smith for a screening of Come Walk in My Shoes on January 24 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Simpson Multipurpose Room. The film follows the Honorable John R. Lewis as he leads colleagues from the House and the Senate on an emotional pilgrimage to sacred sites of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama. The journey begins in Montgomery, where an 18-year-old Lewis first met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and ends in Selma on the Edmund Pettus Bridge where the future congressman was brutally beaten as he led a march for the right to vote. View a Film About the Garbage Business
Attend a screening of the documentary film Trashed on January 23 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. in Rubloff Auditorium. Trashed analyzes the effects that waste has on American society and the environment. A panel discussion focusing on research implications for scholars and commercial research firms will be held immediately after the film. Panel participants include:

Participate in a Career Self-Assessment Workshop (C-SAW) through the Career Development Center. Participate in the Loyola Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (LUROP), which administers all undergraduate research opportunities at Loyola. Undergraduate research distinguishes students for future opportunities in graduate or professional school, as well as potential career opportunities. LUROP participants:

- Learn how research skills may be applied to solve real world problems.

Stop By the Renovated Halas Sports Center
After extensive renovations, the refurbished Halas Sports Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary by offering a 25% discount on new memberships to those who sign up by January 25.
- Stop by Halas to work out, meet new people and have a good time. Membership at Halas is included in all full-time undergraduate student fees, so be sure to check out everything the facility has to offer: cardio and variable-resistance machines, a swimming pool, free weights, basketball and volleyball courts, and saunas. Complete Charge Authorization Forms
Charge Authorization Forms allow students to add Rambler Bucks to their Campus Cards in order to purchase textbooks at the Loyola bookstore. Students may add up to $600 to their Campus Card per semester. This charge is added to the student's account and must be paid in full along with all other tuition and fees. Please note that only one form per semester will be accepted. Charge Authorization Forms for the Spring Semester will be accepted through January 25 at 5 p.m. The forms are available at: LUC.edu/campuscard/forms.shtml.
Request Meal Plan Changes
Get a different meal plan for the Spring Semester by completing a Change Request Form. These forms allow students to change the meal plan requested on their housing contracts. Resident students must comply with the guidelines of their status and housing assignments, but are encouraged to submit the form if they wish to change their meal plan. Non-resident students may purchase any meal plan and have the cost charged to his or her student account. Resident Meal Plan Change Request Forms will be accepted for upgrades through January 25 at 5 p.m. Non-resident Meal Plan Request Forms will be accepted through March 15.
