    Study in Rome This Fall

It's not too late to apply to study at the John Felice Rome Center during the Fall 2008 Semester! Apply today and the Rome Center will expedite your application and assist you with the visa process. The Rome Center offers an orientation tour around northern Italy at no extra cost, which includes trips to Verona, Sienna, and Assisi. Select classes that count toward Core Curriculum, major, or minor requirements. All financial aid, scholarships, and loans transfer to the Rome Center. Take advantage of this amazing opportunity and apply now! All applications must be received by July 23. For more information, please contact the Rome Center at 773.508.2760, or e-mail rome@luc.edu.

Learn About Loyola's New Shuttles and Bus Shelter

Loyola's shuttle buses will resume service on August 25. This year, Loyola will debut a new fleet of shuttles equipped with several additional features:

    • Environmentally friendly. Loyola's new shuttles are manufactured in California, a state known for its commitment to stringent auto emissions laws. The shuttles will produce lower emissions levels than the buses used on campus in previous years, emitting 9.3% less CO (carbon monoxide), 13.6% less NOx (nitrogen oxide), 42.8% less PM (particulate matter), and 58.3% less hydrocarbon.

    • Greater capacity. The new shuttles have the ability to transport 75 students, which is an increase of more than 20 students from last year.

    • Bike racks. Each shuttle bus can carry two bikes on its front end.

    • Handicap accessible. The shuttles feature a hydraulic lift system that allows passengers in wheelchairs to board, and also features fold-up, wheelchair-accessible seats.

Along with the new buses, a new 24-foot bus shelter is being constructed at the Lake Shore Campus and will be operational as of August 25. The new bus stop will be located at the south end of Halas Field and will allow three shuttle buses to park and load students immediately, rather than having the buses line up along the campus drive and forcing students to stand in long lines. The old bus shelter located in the Main Parking Structure will no longer be used.

For more information about the new shuttles and bus stop, contact Eniko Racz at 773.508.3184, or e-mail eracz@luc.edu.

Request Meal Plan Changes and Charge Authorizations

If you want to upgrade, downgrade, or change your resident/non-resident meal plan for the Fall 2008 Semester, you may do so by submitting a meal plan change request form online at the Campus Card Web site. Meal plan change request forms have the following deadlines:

    • August 15: Downgrade or switch resident meal plans
    • September 5: Upgrade resident meal plan within your designated meal plan category
    • November 3: Submit a non-resident meal plan request

Also, submit a charge authorization form, which allows you to add Rambler Bucks to your Campus Card. Charge authorization forms are currently available for the Fall 2008 Semester. To submit the form, go to the Campus Card Web site and complete the form using your LOCUS username and password. After you complete the form, the Rambler Bucks will be available on your account beginning August 1. The deadline to submit a charge authorization request form is September 5.

For more information about meal plans and charge authorizations, visit the Campus Card Web site, or e-mail campuscard@luc.edu.

Take Advantage of Career Center Services

Visit the Career Development Center during the summer to have your resume critiqued, or speak with a career advisor about your internship or job searches. Set up an appointment by calling 773.508.7716.

Plan to attend the Community Service and Job Fair on September 3 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the Gentile Center. Representatives from various businesses, non-profit organizations, campus departments, and other areas will recruit students for paid part-time jobs, service-learning and community volunteer positions, internships, and on-campus and community-based Federal Work-Study positions. Admission to the fair is free and registration is not required. Dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes to the event. For more information, visit the Career Development Center Web site.

Congratulate Loyola's 2008 Fulbright Award Winners

Three recent Loyola graduates are the recipients of 2008 Fulbright Awards.

    • Stephanie Baldwin, Class of 2008, Political Science and International Studies Major: Baldwin will travel to Morocco and work with the Support Group for the Education of Rural Girls, a non-governmental organization that provides education to young Moroccan girls. In addition to receiving the Fulbright Award, Baldwin was also awarded a Critical Language Enhancement Award, which will allow her to partake in an intensive study of Arabic prior to the start of her project.

    • Katherine Good, Class of 2007, Anthropology and International Studies Major: As a recipient of a Fulbright-mtvU Fellowship, Good will travel to Mexico and produce podcasts that anthropologically explore the Mexican youth renaissance of performing various pre-rock music styles. Good will record at the School of Mexican Music in Mexico City and the danzón and son jarocho scenes of Veracruz.

    • Matthew Murphy, Class of 2007, Spanish Major: Murphy will travel to Morocco and work with the medical and academic communities to conduct research on health care and preventative medicine. His project will specifically focus on the prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering students, scholars, and professionals opportunities to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Fulbright Awards provide students with grants to fund one academic year of study, research, or teaching assistantship experience. Graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students in all areas of study are eligible to apply. Loyola's 2009 Fulbright application deadline is September 19, 2008. Interested students should contact Dr. James Calcagno, Fulbright Program Advisor, at 773.508.3472, or e-mail jcalcag@luc.edu.

Also, plan to visit Loyola's new Fellowship Office, which will open in the Sullivan Center for Student Services for the Fall 2008 Semester. The Fellowship Office will provide students with information on national fellowships and scholarships, and also assist students with the application process.
