Study Abroad During Summer Sessions—Last Chance!

Note Course Withdrawal Deadline
The deadline for students to withdraw from a class with a grade of "W" has been extended until March 25 at 5 p.m. The Office of Academic Advising and Services (OAAS) will be open March 24 - 25 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. to assist students with withdrawals. Learn About Internships That Earn Academic Credit

Discover the different resources available in the Center for Experiential Learning (CEL), including online internship tools, help with the internship search process, application and interview guidelines, and tips to help you obtain your desired internship. Enroll in Summer Courses That Benefit the Community
Get "real world" experience and develop new skills while serving in the community. CEL is sponsoring the following electives during Summer Sessions 2008:
- NIV 290-001: Seminar in Community-based Service and Leadership
(Wednesdays, 4:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., Lake Shore Campus)
- UNIV 390-001: Internship Seminar: Organizational Change and Community Leadership
(Thursdays, 4:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., Lake Shore Campus)
Both courses meet the "Values" Core Curriculum requirement of civic engagement or leadership. Students in these seminars will work closely with CEL staff to select off-campus community sites and internship placements that complement in-class course content and coursework in any field of study. Please note that you do not need to have an internship or service-learning placement prior to registering: The CEL staff will help you identify opportunities and prepare you for your placement search before the class begins. Sing During Holy Week Services
Join the Schola Cantorum vocal ensemble during Holy Week and perform during four special Masses. Singers will perform at Madonna della Strada Chapel during the following services:
- March 20, Holy Thursday: 5:30 p.m.
- March 21, Good Friday: 3 p.m.
- March 22, Easter Vigil: 7:30 p.m.
- March 23, Easter Sunday: 10:30 a.m.
Participants must attend a mandatory rehearsal in Madonna della Strada Chapel on March 19 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., and also attend at least one of the following additional rehearsals:
- March 9, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.
- March 12, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
- March 16, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.

Attend the Chapel Lecture Series
Go to the Chapel Lecture Series on March 10 at 7 p.m. in Madonna della Strada Chapel. Thomas Reese, S.J., senior research fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center in Washington, D.C., will speak on the topic of "Faithful Citizenship" and discuss whether there are Catholic issues in the 2008 election. Reese is a widely recognized expert on the U.S. Catholic Church and author of numerous books including Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church. Kick Off Women's History Month
Attend "Unsung Heroes," the Women's History Month kick-off event, on March 10 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the lobby of Centennial Forum Student Union (CFSU). The event will showcase heroes from the past, present and future who have not been recognized by mainstream society. Check Out the Health and Vendor Fair
Go to the Health and Vendor Fair on March 11 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Terry Student Center. The fair, which is being held in conjunction with Women's History Month, will feature samples and services from local businesses including Stiles Chiropractic, Mary Kay, Argo Tea and Curves. Representatives from several Loyola organizations, including Women in Business, the Wellness Center and Continuum, will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information. Donations of old jewelry will be collected at the fair to benefit Bottomless Closet, a local organization designed to help women in need prepare for professional employment. Join the Season of Nonviolence Dialogue
Participate in a Season of Nonviolence event, "Challenging Narrow Gender Roles in Popular Media: A Dinner and Dialogue," on March 11 at 6 p.m. in Bremner Lounge. Sponsored by the Sexual Assault Awareness Group (SAAG), this event will engage Loyola community members in a thoughtful discussion about how representations of women and men in music, movies, video games and advertisements translate into high statistics of violence against women. Participants will engage in a roundtable discussion and determine ways to challenge and resist negative and inaccurate gender representations, as well as explore alternative and more positive forms of media. Celebrate Veritas Month
Join Campus Crusade for Christ and celebrate Veritas Month on March 12 at 7:11 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building, Room 412. "Veritas" is the Latin word for "truth," and the event will feature food, games and conversations about God. For more information, contact Nick Jensen at: njensen@luc.edu.
Register for Workshops on Resumes, Cover Letters and Interviewing
Go to a Resume and Cover Letter Workshop on March 11 and an Interviewing Workshop on March 12. Both workshops will be held in the Crown Center, Room 530, from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. At the Resume and Cover Letter Workshop, students should bring copies of their current resumes for evaluation. For the Interviewing Workshop, students should dress in professional attire for a clothing evaluation and possible one-on-one mock interviews. The workshops will also include basic "how-to" presentations, along with question and answer sessions. Faculty members from the Department of Communication will be available at both events. Although the workshops are specifically designed for students majoring in advertising/public relations, communication and journalism, all students are welcome to attend.

Participate in the Black Women's Retreat
Go to the 2008 Black Women's Retreat on March 15 - 16. Sponsored by the Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, this two-day retreat is themed "Our Journey Towards Success" and will help participants nurture the physical, mental, emotional, professional, academic and communal aspects being Black women at Loyola. Introduce Chicago Teenagers to Loyola
Volunteer to be a tour guide, mentor and host for Chicago-area teenagers visiting Loyola. Through a partnership with the Chicago GEAR UP Alliance, Loyola hosts college visits for eighth- and ninth-graders. Student volunteers give tours of the Lake Shore Campus, answer questions about high school and college, facilitate academic activities, and eat lunch with visiting students. Each college visit is three to four hours long and is held between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. Upcoming college visits will be held on the following dates:
- March 15
- March 29
- April 5
- April 11
- April 19

Become a S.T.A.R.S. Mentor
Apply to become a mentor for the Students Together Are Reaching Success (S.T.A.R.S.) program for the 2008 - 2009 academic year. S.T.A.R.S. promotes academic success and personal development, as well as campus leadership and involvement. Mentors assist first-year students and help them adjust to college life. Applications are due to the Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs by March 17. The fair, which is being held in celebration of Women's History Month, will feature glucose and cholesterol screenings, body density screenings, body composition analysis, blood pressure check-ups, and information regarding women's health and wellness issues. Volunteer on St. Baldrick's Day
Raise money for a good cause by participating in the Third Annual St. Baldrick's Day Celebration on March 25. Sponsored by Loyola and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, this event benefits the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for childhood cancer research. Hair loss is a common part of the chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients, and St. Baldrick's Day allows people to show support for those in need. Participants seek donations from family and friends and then get their heads shaved at the event. Sign up now and start raising money!
