Look for Loyola Focus on January 11

    Discover the New Information Commons

Join President Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., and members of the Loyola community for an open house and dedication ceremony for the new Information Commons on December 7 from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. Situated on the lakefront, Information Commons is a high-tech and environmentally friendly library that is expected to earn silver-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Tours of the new facility will take place immediately following the dedication ceremony. The Information Commons, which will connect to Loyola's main Cudahy Library, is located at 6501 N. Kenmore Ave. at the Lake Shore Campus. To learn more, visit: http://libraries.luc.edu/about/ic/index.htm.

For more information, contact Rebecca Newman at: rnewman@luc.edu.

    Plan for Summer Sessions

Explore Summer Sessions options at Loyola. Take one, two or three courses from four Summer Sessions to wrap up requirements, add a minor or try something new. To review a preliminary list of summer courses in one location, go to: LUC.edu/summer. Note that summer courses and the list on the Website are subject to change. Please continue to rely on LOCUS for updated and more complete course information. Summer Sessions registration for current students begins February 11. Tell friends and family interested in high-school summer programs about Loyola's Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars program. For more information, visit: LUC.edu/summerscholars.

Seek Help at the Tutoring Center

    Visit the Tutoring Center to get help during finals week. Staff members will be available to help students on December 10 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., December 11 - 13 from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., and December 14 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call: 773.508.7708.

    Wrap Up Magis Requirements

Although the Magis program at Loyola has been suspended, students who want to receive the Magis designation at graduation have until the end of Spring Semester 2008 to finish their Magis requirements, which are to complete three Magis classes, three leadership activities and three community engagement activities. Magis courses are listed in LOCUS under the Honors, Magis and Writing Intensive categories in the drop-down menu. Students may also contract with a willing professor of any Loyola course to have the course count for Magis credit. The following two classes are not Magis-designated, but will automatically count as Magis courses during the Spring Semester:

    UNIV 290 - 001: Seminar in Community-based Service and Leadership (Lake Shore Campus, Wednesdays from 4:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., Class #5704)

UNIV 390 - 001: Internship Seminar: Organizational Change and Community Leadership (Lake Shore Campus, Thursdays from 4:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., Class #5705)

For more information about Magis, contact Lisa Kerr, Director of Academic Advising, at: 773.508.2756; or e-mail: lkerr@luc.edu.

    Network During the Holidays

Use the holiday break to network and job-search. It's a common misconception that companies do not recruit or hire in December. Year-end is actually a great time to job search for these reasons:

  • Many companies must spend their budgets before the end of the year, so they want to get new salaries "on the books" before January and start the new year with fresh hires.

  • Fewer people apply for jobs in December, so there is less competition in the job search market.

  • There are many great networking opportunities during December, including holiday events and gatherings at schools, churches and in the community. Family members are also great networking contacts. People tend to be more generous during the holidays, and the giving atmosphere might encourage people to assist you.

Remember that when students are enjoying the holiday break, most businesses and organizations remain open or are closed for just a few short days. Take advantage of this time to do career research, conduct informational interviews, network and submit job or internship applications.

The Career Development Center will be open December 17 - January 11 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., but will be closed on December 24, 25 and 31, and January 1 and 10. Career advisors are available to discuss your career plans, critique resumes, and assist with your job and internship searches. To schedule an appointment, call 773.508.7716; or e-mail: careercenter@luc.edu.

    Complete Charge Authorization Forms

Charge Authorization Forms allow students to add Rambler Bucks to their Campus Cards in order to purchase textbooks at the Loyola bookstore. Students may add up to $600 to their Campus Card per semester. This charge is added to the student's account and must be paid in full along with all other tuition and fees. Please note that only one form per semester will be accepted. Charge Authorization Forms for the Spring Semester will be accepted December 5 - January 25 at 5 p.m. The forms will be available at: LUC.edu/campuscard/forms.shtml.

    Request Meal Plan Changes

Get a different meal plan for the Spring Semester by completing a Change Request Form. These forms allow students to change the meal plan requested on their housing contracts. Resident students must comply with the guidelines of their status and housing assignments, but are encouraged to submit the form if they wish to change their meal plan. Non-resident students may purchase any meal plan and have the cost charged to his or her student account. Resident Meal Plan Change Request Forms will be accepted for downgrades through January 4 at 5 p.m. Resident students wishing to upgrade their plans can do so through January 25 at 5 p.m. Non-resident Meal Plan Request Forms will be accepted through March 15. Both forms are available at: LUC.edu/campuscard/forms.shtml. If you have any questions about meal plan options, e-mail: campuscard@luc.edu.

Join a Mentoring Program for First-Generation Students

The Offices of First-Year Experience and Alumni Relations are partnering to connect first-generation Loyola students with Chicago-area alumni who were also first-generation students. The new mentoring program will provide current students with opportunities to interact with Loyola graduates interested in the success of Loyola students who will be the first person in their families to graduate from college. For more information or to enroll in the program, contact Bridget Wesley at: 773.508.2814; or e-mail: bwesley@luc.edu.

    Register for the Biodiesel Course

Enroll in Solutions to Environmental Problems (STEP): Biodiesel, a new course offering for the Spring Semester. Students will help create solutions to reduce Loyola’s impact on the environment and become more sustainable. As part of the course, waste and emissions are reduced by turning waste vegetable oil from Loyola’s cafeterias into low-emissions biodiesel fuel. This unique learning opportunity integrates lecture, lab practicum and team project components. Students work closely with faculty members from multiple disciplines to make biodiesel and investigate scientific, social, political, and economic dimensions of alternative fuel adoption. For more information, contact Alison Varty at: 773.508.8255; e-mail: avarty@luc.edu; or visit: LUC.edu/biodiesel.

Prepare for the Smoke Free Illinois Act

Quit smoking now in preparation for the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which takes effect January 1. This statewide legislation bans smoking in all public places, in all places of employment and within 15 feet of any entrance to a public place or place of employment. Locations included in, but not limited to, the ban are hospitals, restaurants, bars, offices, concert halls, educational facilities, schools, meeting rooms, convention facilities, private clubs, lobbies, bowling alleys, skating rinks and student dormitories. All of Loyola's campuses are already smoke free.

The Wellness Center offers resources and support to students trying to quit smoking. For more information, visit: LUC.edu/wellness/quit.shtml. To learn more about the Smoke Free Illinois Act, visit: www.smokefreeillinois.org; or: www.idph.state.il.us.

Get Help Adjusting to College Life

Congratulations to freshmen students for completing their first semester at Loyola! Many students consider their first semester to be one of the most challenging parts of the college experience. For help dealing with finals week or preparing for the Spring Semester, contact Bridget Wesley in the Office of the First-Year Experience at: 773.508.2814; or e-mail: bwesley@luc.edu.

Plan for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Attend the Dreaming of Justice: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on January 23 at 5:15 p.m. in Galvin Auditorium. The event will feature guest speaker Judge Greg Mathis, star of the television show Judge Mathis. Mathis is a former street youth and high-school dropout whose misbehavior eventually brought him before a judge. The judge ordered Mathis to get a GED or face jail time. Mathis obtained his GED and went on to become a committed civil rights activist, public servant and the youngest elected judge in the state of Michigan. This event is sponsored by the Office of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. For more information, contact Kevin Huie at: 773.508.3335; or e-mail: khuie@luc.edu.
