Completed housing contracts and $200 deposits (payable by check or money order) must be received by March 2. Turn in your contracts and deposits between February 26 and March 2 in the Regis Hall Seminar Room or at the Baumhart Hall Residence Life office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Loyola requires all unmarried undergraduate students under the age of 21 to live on-campus during their first two years, unless they reside at home with a parent or legal guardian. All current freshmen seeking exemption from the residency requirement must complete a Request for Exemption form and submit it to the Department of Residence Life by February 23. The form can be downloaded at: www.luc.edu/reslife/forms.

Loyola Names New Top Academic Officer

Fr. Michael Garanzini, S.J., president, has announced the appointment of a new provost for Loyola University Chicago: Christine Wiseman, J.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law, Creighton University. Provost Wiseman will assume her new position on July 1, 2007. She succeeds Dr. John Frendreis, Ph.D., who has served as provost since June 2005. For more about Provost Wiseman's background and President Garanzini's announcement, visit: http://info.luc.edu/newsevents/public/news_release.cfm?newsID=5660.

    Learn About Law Internships

Attend an information session to learn more about the undergraduate internship and seminar program sponsored by the School of Law, Department of Political Science and Magis Initiative. Students who will have second semester sophomore, junior or senior status by Fall 2007 can apply for a fall internship with such public-interest organizations as the Cook County Public Defender's Office or the State's Attorney Office. Interns will also participate in seminar sessions with law faculty. In addition to receiving three academic credit hours in political science, students earn one Magis credit hour that counts toward the requirements for Magis Scholars. Information sessions about the internship program will be held in the Sullivan Center, Room 259, on February 20 from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m., and March 14 from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The internship application deadline is March 30. For more information, call Dr. Alan Gitelson at: 773.508.8751; or e-mail: agitels@luc.edu.

    Submit the 2007-2008 FAFSA

Begin the financial aid process for the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year, if you haven't already.

To be considered for as many types of aid as possible, submit your FAFSA online by February 26 to meet Loyola's March 1 priority application date. Mail paper FAFSAs by February 17 to meet the March 1 date. Students who miss the March 1 date will be considered for federal and state funds only. If funds remain, only then will Loyola Grants be awarded to students whose FAFSAs are filed late and will be considered for a reduced amount.

Please note that filing online is not only faster, but reveals and highlights errors for correction before your FAFSA is even submitted, which leads to easier processing and a reduced need for additional documentation.

For more information about filing the FAFSA online, visit: www.luc.edu/finaid/apply_assistance.shtml. If you have questions about the FAFSA or about the financial aid process, e-mail the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at: lufinaid@luc.edu.

    Boost Study and Exam Skills

The Office of Academic Advising and Services offers the following workshops for students:

    Study Smarter, Not Harder
    February 19, 4 p.m. - 4:50 p.m., Sullivan Center Room 202
Learn different study strategies to help you study smarter, not harder.

    Test-Taking Strategies
    February 26, 4 p.m. - 4:50 p.m., Sullivan Center Room 202
Learn how to review for tests and balance the test preparation demands of all of your classes. This workshop presents a study plan to help students avoid ineffective last-night cramming, reduce anxiety and improve test results.

For more information or to register for these workshops, visit: www.luc.edu/tutoring/workshops.shtml.

    Participate in a Prayer Luncheon

All students are invited to attend the Modeling Faith Prayer Luncheon on March 1 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in Kasbeer Hall at the Water Tower Campus. Prayer luncheons are open to people of all faiths, and provide a chance for individuals to come together over a meal and reflect on the role of faith in day-to-day life. Please RSVP to Sandy Godinez by February 23 at: sgodine@luc.edu. Be sure to indicate if you want a vegetarian meal.

    Sign Up for Campus Retreats

University Ministry is sponsoring several retreats for students:

    Busy Students' Retreat
Experience an individually guided on-campus retreat from February 18 - 22. Participants pray on their own and meet once a day with a spiritual companion. Meetings are set around your class schedule, and scripture-based reflection materials are provided.

    Silent Ignatian Directed Retreat
Based on the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, this retreat provides an opportunity for mature undergraduate and graduate students to take time out from their hectic lives to become more deeply self-aware. The retreat takes place in a rural setting from March 5 - 9. Daily activities include individual spiritual direction, Mass and a time for Reconciliation.

For more information about these retreats or to register, call Rachel Hart at: 773.508.2203; or e-mail: rhart@luc.edu.

    Investigate Career Options

Have you done company and industry research on potential careers and employers? Visit the Career Center's eRecruiting Website and access the "Experience Channels" and "Wetfeet Insider Guides" on the home page. These subscriptions provide detailed information about various career and industry profiles. For more career resources, visit: www.luc.edu/career/resources.shtml.

Visit the Career Center during walk-in advising hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Sullivan Center, Room 295
  • Monday and Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., 1 E. Pearson/Maguire Hall, Room 236

Career tip: Is your voicemail message something you want an employer to hear? Do your Facebook and MySpace profiles reflect a professional image? Make sure that blogs, online profiles and photographs, and personal Websites only contain content that you are comfortable with potential employers seeing. Many employers research job applicants online, especially student candidates.

Prepare Your Student E-mail System for Shutdown

The migration from the old Student E-mail System (SEM) to GroupWise 7 Web Access is now in its final stage. On March 9, students will no longer have access to SEM. Be sure to back up any messages in your SEM mailbox that you wish to keep by forwarding e-mail from your SEM mailbox to your current GroupWise e-mail address. Also, please be aware that your old address book was not moved to GroupWise, so you will need to recreate it in the new e-mail program.

Information Technology Services (ITS) thanks you for your cooperation and patience during this project. If you have questions, call the Technology Support Center at: 773.508.7190 or 4.4444 (on campus); or e-mail: helpdesk@luc.edu.

    Appear on "The Early Show"

Want to be on TV? The nationally syndicated CBS program, "The Early Show," is recruiting a student audience for a live broadcast on February 23.
