Prepare Calendar Software for New Daylight Savings Time Hours

Daylight Savings Time begins almost a month earlier than usual this year because of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The switch to Daylight Savings time begins at 2 a.m. on March 11. Microsoft recently released a patch that updates the start and end dates for Daylight Saving Time. This patch will likely cause problems with all forms of calendar software, including Loyola's GroupWise and WebAccess, for appointments within the extended Daylight Saving Time period (March 11 - April 1 and October 28 - November 4).

If you use any type of calendar software, please review all appointments scheduled within the extended Daylight Savings Time period and confirm with the meeting organizer that the appointment is scheduled for the correct time. Appointments may be off by one hour, which will require a resend of the appointment in order to correct the problem. Also, when sending out new meeting invitations, include the correct start time of the meeting in the subject line. For example: "Study group meeting at 7:30 p.m."

Detailed information about the extended Daylight Savings Time and instructions on how to reschedule appointments is available at: www.luc.edu/its/dst.shtml. If you have any questions, please call the ITS Technology Support Center at: ext. 44444; or: 773.508.7190.

Plan for a Safe St. Patrick's Day Celebration

If you're already thinking ahead to St. Patrick's Day, Loyola's Safety Net Coalition hopes you'll plan to celebrate safely and make smart decisions regarding drinking. The Safety Net Coalition is a group of faculty, administrators, staff, students and community members whose mission is to build a safer and healthier campus environment for the prevention of alcohol and other drug misuse among Loyola students.

The Coalition reminds students that having a good time doesn't require drinking, and that if you're under 21, drinking is illegal. The best way to avoid trouble and dangerous situations is not to drink. But, if you do decide to drink, there are steps that can help you stay safe, including: Set a limit for how much you'll drink. Make sure no one goes to or from a party alone. Carry extra money for cab fare. Get a new beverage if you've left yours unattended or if you're not sure it's yours.

To get more tips for a safe St. Pat's and other information about Loyola's alcohol initiative, check out: Choice. Control. Character. Making decisions about drinking, at: www.luc.edu/ccc.

His efforts to help stop the slaughter earned him his second Pulitzer Prize. The mystery of creation and conflicts between religion and science continue to inspire and perplex the human mind and spirit. How were these issues addressed more than 80 years ago? This lecture centers on Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's ideas on how Christianity and evolution are connected, and how he may have responded to the modern concepts of intelligent design and the anthropic principle.
