    Register for Spring 2008 Courses

Registration for Spring 2008 classes begins November 12. Here are some registration tips from the Office of Academic Advising and Services (OAAS):

Plan ahead. Know what classes you want to take and have substitutes in case some of your first choices are closed.

Find out when you can register. Your registration date can be found in LOCUS under "Academics" in "View Enrollment Appt."

Check LOCUS for holds and balances before your registration appointment, which will block you from enrolling in Spring Semester classes.

View a tutorial on how to search and register for classes. The tutorial is available in the LOCUS help box by clicking on "Performing a Class Search in LOCUS."

To register, go to LUC.edu, click on "LOCUS" and log in using your universal I.D. (UVID) and password. (If you have any problems, click on the "Personal Account Manager" link.) You will see a menu box in the top left corner. Go to "Academics," click on "Enroll in a Class" and then choose your term. Go to "Add Classes" and enter the catalog number for the subject you want to enroll in. The catalog number can be found at LUC.edu under the "Calendars" section. You can also search for the catalog number by clicking on the hourglass when you're in the "Add Classes" section.

Don't panic! Once your registration opens, you will have from then until the end of the first week of classes to modify your class schedule.

Remember that you must register for 12 - 18 credit hours to be a full-time student. Undergraduate students receiving any of Loyola's merit-based scholarships are expected to complete each semester as a full-time student. If you are a scholarship recipient and have dropped below full-time status, contact Edward Moore, Scholarship Director, in the Office of Student Financial Assistance at: 773.508.8928; or e-mail: emoore@luc.edu to discuss the impact of future scholarship eligibility.

First register for courses that you must take to stay on track for your major. Of these, first register for labs and those courses that are most time consuming.

Be flexible. Try to design the best schedule for you, but be willing to take classes at either campus or in the evenings.

Learn which classes meet Core Curriculum requirements by visiting: LUC.edu/core.

Set up parent/guest access to your student account. Use LOCUS to give your parents or other guests the ability to view your e-Bills and financial information.

First-year students who have not met with their advisors and would like assistance preparing for registration are welcome to attend a small-group registration meeting. These meetings will be held November 12 - 14. Students can ask questions, get information about the registration process and learn what classes are required for their majors. Meeting times and sign-up sheets are available at the Hub locations. Space is limited, so sign up today.

    Plan for Summer Sessions

Consider your summer academic plans when registering for Spring Semester 2008 courses. Students may take one, two or three courses from four summer sessions to wrap up requirements, add a minor or try something new. To review a preliminary list of summer courses in one location, go to: LUC.edu/summer. Note that summer courses and the list on the Website are subject to change. Please continue to rely on LOCUS for updated and more complete course information.

    Wrap Up Magis Requirements

Students who want to receive the Magis designation at graduation have until the end of Spring Semester 2008 to finish their Magis requirements, which are to complete three Magis classes, three leadership activities and three community engagement activities. Magis courses are listed in LOCUS, but because the program is phasing out, very few courses will be available this spring. Students who still need to take a Magis course can contract with a willing professor of any Loyola course to have the course count for Magis credit. To arrange this, students should propose a 20-hour service activity that will be completed during the Spring Semester and is related to the content of the course. For more information, please e-mail Dr. Lisa Kerr, Director of Advising and Services, at: lkerr@luc.edu.

    See the Play Arcadia

Reserve tickets for Tom Stoppard's award-winning play, Arcadia, which is playing at the Mullady Memorial Theatre through November 11. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for faculty, staff and alumni; $8 for students and seniors; and $6 for Loyola students with a student I.D. The survivors learn from each other and share ways to transcend the horrors of sexual violence. A discussion will follow the film screening, and pizza and drinks will be served. The event is sponsored by the Sexual Assault Awareness Group. To learn more about the film, visit: www.searchingforangelashelton.com.
