Nominate Fellow Students for a Leadership Conference
Loyola's Department of Student Leadership Development will send up to six students to the National Conference on Student Leadership from November 17 - 20. This conference is a skill-building opportunity for students who have demonstrated leadership potential; it is not a reward for outstanding leadership. An advisor will accompany students to the conference and all conferences expenses will be paid. Nominations are open to freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
E-mail nominations by October 22 at 5 p.m. to Jack McLean, Director of Student Leadership Development, at: jmclean@luc.edu. In your e-mail, include the nominee's contact information and the reason you think he or she deserves to attend the conference. All nominees will be required to complete an application, and finalists will be interviewed to complete the selection process. For more information about the conference, visit: www.ncslcollege.com/ncsl/fall.html. If you have any questions, contact Jack McLean at: 773.508.3912; or e-mail: jmclean@luc.edu.
Learn About Loyola's Recycling Program
Participate in Loyola's commitment to reduce landfill disposal. In July 2007, the Lake Shore Campus switched to a more efficient recycling program, "separating at the source," collecting recyclables separately from trash. This change makes it possible to track how much waste is recyclable. During the months of August and September, 6.7 tons of recyclables were collected.
To request recycling bins for your dormitory, talk with your RA and submit a work order request, available at: http://tma.it.luc.edu/home.html. Recyclable items include mixed paper (cardboard, magazines, copy paper, file folders, envelopes), plastics, cans and glass. Please dispose of all recyclables in their respective bins. To learn more about recycling and find out how you can reduce waste, e-mail Gina Lettiere at: glettie@luc.edu; or Summur Roberts at: srober6@luc.edu.

Find Out About "Superbug" Infections
Learn how to protect yourself from "superbug" infections. Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to as "staph," is an organism commonly found on the skin of healthy individuals. It is responsible for many skin infections and can be treated with antibiotics. Certain staph infections, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), are resistant to antibiotics. Most MRSA infections are acquired at health care facilities like hospitals and nursing homes. However, approximately 12% of MRSA infections are transmitted by close skin-to-skin contact, contact with openings in the skin such as cuts or abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions, or poor hygiene. MRSA can only be diagnosed by a health care provider. Symptoms may include irritable pimples or boils. Treatment of MRSA includes antibiotics and/or wound drainage. To learn more about MRSA and other "superbugs," visit the Wellness Center Website at: LUC.edu/wellness/mrsa.shtml.
