Damen Award Recipient: Stritch School of Medicine

Dr. Joel P. Carpenter, MD ’89

Joel Carpenter (MD '89) has dedicated his life to caring for sick, hurting, and needy people in rural Africa. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1985 and his doctorate from Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine in 1989. He served as a family practice physician in the U.S. Navy for six years, and then he moved to Tennessee to work in a rural clinic for three years.

In March 1999, Dr. Carpenter went to Tanzania, in East Africa, as a missionary doctor. During his 17 years serving there, he started two mission clinics, trained several clinical officers (like nurse practitioners), treated thousands of needy patients, delivered hundreds of babies, and helped more than 10 churches get started.
