Graduate Scholars
What is a Graduate Scholar?
A Graduate Scholar is a full-time Graduate School of Business student who dedicates, on average, 20 hours of work per week to the Graduate School of Business for a time commitment of one year. Duties can vary from position to position depending on the needs of the professors/departments and may include areas such as research, web development, project support, office support, student programming, faculty support and much more. In addition, Graduate Scholars plan and support the Graduate School of Business in the planning and implementation of Admissions and Orientation activities.
What are the benefits of becoming a Graduate Scholar?
Graduate Scholars are eligible for some tuition support and possibly a stipend, depending on the department to which the Graduate Scholar is assigned and provided that the student is enrolled in at least two courses during that quarter. Graduate Scholars are also in a position to work closely with new and current students, as well as the faculty of the Graduate School of Business. Positions are normally designed for a duration of four quarters (any extensions would be negotiated between the supervising office, the GSB, and the graduate scholar). Graduate Scholars find the program to be a rewarding experience for a variety of reasons, including their ability to work closely with professors/departments on a variety of different tasks.
What are the required qualifications for the Graduate Scholars program?
The Graduate Scholars program is designed to help students who have a strong academic and career/job related background. Although a strong GPA and high GMAT scores are important considerations for this scholarship program, each Graduate Scholar position has specific needs which determine the qualifications for that particular position. Individual staff and faculty members hire for these positions and, therefore, determine the qualifications for their particular area. Students must be available to work 10 or 20 hours per week (as determined by the supervising office and the GSB), with additional time spent on some supporting projects. Only full-time students are considered for the Scholars program, and students generally must be able to serve as Graduate Scholars for four consecutive quarters from the time that they are awarded the position.
How many Graduate Scholar positions are available?
The Graduate Scholar positions are very limited. Depending on the term, anywhere from approximately one to ten students are selected as Graduate Scholars for a period of four quarters.
How can someone be considered for the Graduate Scholars program?
Only admitted students to the GSB who are pursuing their business degree on a full-time basis are eligible to apply for the program. Once admitted, students should fill out the following application before beginning their coursework. A variety of Graduate School of Business faculty and staff review applications and consider applicants at different times during the year. Some Graduate Scholar positions are only awarded to incoming students. Positions are generally designed for applicants who are in the first portion of their program in the Graduate School of Business, since positions ask full-time GSB students to serve four consecutive quarters. Applicants who are not chosen for a position to begin for a specified academic quarter may reapply for consideration for other Graduate Scholars positions which begin in the next consecutive quarter only (since full-time students who would want to reapply later should likely not be in the position to serve for four consecutive quarters if they are making progress toward their degree).
HOW CAN SOMEONE APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM, AND WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION DEADLINES?
Students must complete the online application and submit a current resume/vita as the first step in the process. Applications and resumes should be submitted by the following dates:
| For positions beginning in: | Application deadline is: |
| Fall Quarter | July 15 |
| Winter Quarter | October 1 |
| Spring Quarter | January 15 |
| Summer Quarter | April 1 |
GRADUATE SCHOLAR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Retention of tuition and stipend benefits for graduate scholars depends upon their meeting expectations for good performance, including timely completion of work for their assigned area and attendance at required GSB events. To retain tuition and stipend benefits, scholars must meet the expectations of the person to whom they report, as well as the expectations of the Graduate School of Business, as outlined above.
