LLM or Master of Laws in Health Law Program for Attorneys
Frequently Asked Questions About the LLM Program
What is the application deadline?
Applications are accepted each year from October 1st until July 1st. If you are currently in law school, you can get a jump on the competition by applying for the accelerated LLM degree and coming to Loyola for a semester or two while you're still a JD student. For more on this option, click here. Early applications are advised.
Do I have to be a member of the bar to be admitted to the LLM program?
While most of the LLM candidates are members of the bar, it is not a pre-requisite for admission. However, if you are member of the bar you must be in good standing.
How are applicants evaluated?
Early applications are advised. Click here to apply on-line. Applications must include transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended and two letters of recommendation. A personal interview may also be required. Our admissions committee looks at each applicant to evaluate writing skills, grades (particularly in law school), experience, and career intentions and how these fit with the curriculum and goals of the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy.
How many students are admitted?
Loyola admits only 8-15 students into the LLM program annually. We keep our enrollments small to ensure a high degree of faculty-student interaction and individualized attention. LLM graduates often quote this feature of our program as a critical success factor.
When was the LLM program first offered?
Loyola started offering the LLM in Health Law degree in 1987 and was one of the first programs of its kind in the nation.
Are scholarships and financial aid available to LLM Student?
Loyola offers an LLM Fellowship each year to students based on merit. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify. Click here for information about financial aid at Loyola.
When does the LLM program start each year?
The on-campus LLM program starts only in the fall semester, typically beginning the 3rd week of August of each year.
What is the make-up of the class?
Diversity is also critical to the success of the LLM program. Loyola draws students from around the nation and the world. Typically about half of each LLM class is composed of students right out of law school, while the other half are practicing lawyers who are returning to law school to change the focus of their practice.
How long does it take to get the degree?
It is a 24-credit degree that you can complete in one academic year if you choose to attend full-time, or two academic years if you choose a part-time schedule.
Admitted students will receive further information about courses, scheduling, registration, and orientation programs.
