Loyola Health Law Students Visit Puerto Rico to Study Access to Health Care
|
Nearly 20 Loyola students traveled with Professor Lawrence Singer to Puerto Rico over their spring break to study the Puerto Rican health system and examine issues surrounding access to health care. The group met with the Secretary of Health, Dr. Jaime Rivera Dueno, visited the Insurance Administration and multiple health care facilities, and met with Angel Martinez, President of the Senate's Health Committee at the Puerto Rican Capitol. Students experienced first hand the challenges of providing government health insurance to a population in which 60% of citizens live at or below the federal poverty line. |

Institute of Medicine Public Meeting: Recommendations on National Priorities for Comparative Effectiveness Research in Health Care
On March 20, 2009 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) held a public meeting during which a limited number of organizations presented their views on Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) in health care. Congress asked IOM in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to recommend priorities for spending on CER to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. IOM expects to release a report on June 30, 2009. Holland & Knight's Health Law & Life Sciences Alert details the key themes from the March 20 meeting.
The U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in Wyeth v. Levine made national headlines. In a recent Bulletin, Bryan Cave's Food and Drug Administration Practice summarized how this decision gives unprecedented power to state tort juries, rather than the Food and Drug Administration, to regulate warning labels for prescription drugs.
