BACKGROUND
The Information Commons (IC) is a partnership between the Loyola University Libraries and Information Technology Services (ITS) to facilitate research with the use of high-quality technology. The IC strives to fulfill the Loyola Promise by providing a learning environment for faculty, staff and students that supports both collaborative and individual research in a technology-friendly setting.
Together, the University Libraries, ITS, and their partners aim to offer support for effective, quality teaching and learning. Support is available through a variety of means, including: research and technology assistance, one-on-one consultations with subject experts, research paper clinics, technology workshops and occasional special-interest workshops. To implement this support, the IC features a wide variety of equipment and applications, such as:
- 220 networked computer workstations (80% PC, 20% Mac), many in groupings
- Assisted Technology Center
- Circulating laptops (in-building)
- Digital Media Lab
- Electronic info-kiosks featuring university news
- Resnet services (offering assistance with personal laptops)
- Scanners, printers, photocopiers
- TeamSpot group collaboration software
- Wireless network access
