IPS Endowed Graduate Student Scholarships
Each academic year, endowed scholarships are available for IPS students. These funds are provided by many generous donors: Leonard Richman, Richard Leach, Blanche Marie Gallagher Scholarship Fund, Virginia Lynch Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the IPS Memorial Scholarship Fund, as well as by Loyola University Chicago. Full-time and part-time students are eligible to apply for Graduate Scholarships. However, the limits of available funds mean that not all applications can be honored. Applicants are asked to include one paragraph each describing why financial assistance is being sought, an assessment of their needs and what their ministry plans and goals are. Current IPS students are required to attach an unofficial transcript to their application. IPS scholarships are figured into the student's financial package and affect the amount they can take out in student loans, often decreasing that amount.

Scholarships are based on the following criteria:
  • Why you require financial assistance
  • An assessment of your needs
  • What your ministry plans and goals are
  • If you are receiving funding from other sources, and if so, to what extent
  • If you are a current IPS studet, a copy of your transcript
  • In addition, current students are required to attach a copy of their current unofficial transcripts to the form.

Current IPS Students are required to have their application for Summer 2009 scholarships in no later than March 17, 2009.
New IPS Students are required to have their applications for Summer 2009 scholarships in no later than May 1, 2009.

Current IPS Students are required to have their application for Academic Year 2009-2010 scholarships in no later than May 1, 2009.

Ministry Matching Grants
The Ministry Matching Grant Program has been developed by Loyola University Chicago to assist women and men actively involved in professional ministry who wish to further their education. Under the terms of the program, participants are asked to acquire the sponsorship of a Church institution, e.g., parish school, diocese, or a social justice agency or not-for-profit organization. If the sponsor agrees to pay 25% of the participant's tuition costs, another 25% will be paid by Loyola, leaving only 50% to be paid by the student. Students must apply for these grants each semester. This grant applies to tuition only and does not cover fees, 0 credit course offerings, books, etc.  Persons wishing to receive an application form should contact the IPS office and submit the application at least one month before the semester begins. Any application received after the deadline will not be funded.

Mission Grant
These grants support the mission and values of Loyola University Chicago and will be continued to the extent that financial resources are available. They cover for-credit courses only. Students are required to pay one-third of their charged tuition; a sponsoring agency will pay another third; and Loyola University Chicago will pay the remaining third. Students covered under the Mission Grant Policy include: members of religious orders working in developing countries; international Jesuits; faculty, staff and administrators employed by one of Loyola's sister schools, i.e., St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, Loyola Academy, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and St. Joseph Seminary; participants in the Archdiocesan Leadership Program; and participants in Together in God's Service Program (see below). Recipients of a Mission Grant from Loyola University Chicago forfeit their eligibility to receive other university-funded scholarships, assistantships or grants. For more information, please consult the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Together In God's Service (TIGS)
IPS participates fully with the Archdiocese of Chicago TIGS Formation Program. Students who anticipate working in the Archdiocese of Chicago upon completion of their degree program are encouraged to contact the Archdiocese of Chicago Lay Ministry Formation Office. The TIGS program provides up to $3,000 per student in annual tuition loan for a core of 39 hours toward an IPS degree. This amount is matched by a Loyola University Chicago annual grant. For further information regarding a scholarship application for Together in God's Service, contact the Archdiocesan Leadership Program Scholarships at www.usml.edu/LayMinistry/.

The Rev. Raymond Baumhart Scholarship Program For Underrepresented Ministers
The Rev. Raymond Baumhart Scholarship Program for Underrepresented Ministers in the Archdiocese of Chicago was created by the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Institute of Pastoral Studies as an ongoing tuition assistance program addressing the need for a wide diversity of ministers serving the parishes and people of Chicago. The program aims to foster lay ecclesial ministry among members of the African-American, Asian and Hispanic communities who participate in the Together In God's Service (TIGS) program by providing them with the opportunity to complete essential academic and formation requirements through Fall tuition grants. For further information regarding the Baumhart Scholarship application, visit: www.usml.edu/LayMinistry/.

Graduate Internships in University Ministry
University Ministry Graduate Internship

University Ministry at Loyola University Chicago is committed to the formation of graduate interns as a means of fulfilling the mission of the university, and our departmental goal of "promoting the development of the whole person with an emphasis on leadership for the church and society."

University Ministry's graduate internship is a two-year program for Loyola graduate students who are exploring a call to ecclesial ministry. While examining this call in the context of a university community, interns work toward proficiency in the skills necessary to answer the call, namely prayer leadership, pastoral care and program management.

The graduate internship carries an annual stipend of $9,000.  Interns are also awarded a graduate tuition scholarship. The scholarship provides tuition remission (at the rate charged by the Institute for Pastoral Studies) for up to 15 semester hours during each of the two academic years. Courses taken must be part of the intern's Loyola University degree program.  The Internship begins on or near August 1st.

To Apply: Please submit a letter of interest, a resume and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three professional references by February 15.  Please visit www.luc.edu/ministry/Grad_Internship.shtml for further application information or contact Shannon Green at sgreen3@luc.edu or 773-508-2206.

Graduate Student Worker
The Institute of Pastoral Studies, in conjunction with Loyola University Chicago, funds six students, $3,000 each, in student work assistance positions. Students are expected to work 8 hours per week for two 14-week semesters. Assistance is renewable. The type of service is determined on an individual basis, but is intended to meet the needs of the Institute and to help the student in professional growth. Students must apply by March 1 of the preceding Spring semester. Send a letter with the application outlining your qualifications and financial needs to Randy Gibbons, IPS Administrative Assistant, at: rgibbon@luc.edu.

    Postgraduate Tuition Reduction Program

To encourage continuing education, IPS has developed the postgraduate tuition reduction program. This program allows students holding a master's degree in specified areas to register for additional study in the same area, as an auditor at a 50% tuition reduction. Relevant degrees include the M.A. in theology, pastoral counseling or pastoral studies, M.P.S., M.R.E. or M.Div.
  • Registration for specific classes is for audit only and not for credit. Nonetheless, participants using the tuition reduction program are required to complete all the assignments of the courses for which they register. Audited courses may not be used for credit toward any additional degree at Loyola. Registration in a particular course is governed by the ordinary approval applicable to any graduate course and is further limited by the availability of space in the desired class. A participant may not take courses for credit and audit simultaneously.

Individuals wishing to take advantage of the postgraduate tuition reduction program should apply to IPS through the Graduate and Professional Enrollment Management Office as a non-degree seeking student.   If the student is an IPS Graduate, please fill out the Re-application form and submit it.  After the student has been admitted into IPS, the student must contact the IPS Office and request Post Graduate Tuition Auditor status. (This should be done at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.)
