Logging into your Computer
Loyola University uses the Novell Client for file and print sharing. In order to access your network drives, your GroupWise email, and shared printers, you must login to the Novell client successfully. The Novell system allows you to access your shared drives from any computer on the network.
First Time Login
- Enter Your Loyola UVID and temporary password into the Username and Password fields. Make sure "Workstation Only" is deselected. Click the Advanced button so you see the Novell Expanded Login Screen.

- The Tree Field should always read Loyola.
- The Context field varies by department. You can find out your context by asking someone in your department or you can go through the steps in "Finding Out Your Context" below.
- The Server field should be left blank.
- Click OK.
- You will be prompted to change your password. Your new password must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least 2 numbers.
- NOTE: Once you’ve successfully logged in from your workstation computer, it will not be necessary to fill in the advanced fields each time, unless someone has attempted to log in from your PC and has changed them. If you have problems logging in from your PC, the first step to troubleshooting is to check the advanced fields and make sure you are logging in to the correct context.
Finding Out Your Context
It is important to know your context. You can find out your context through Loyola’s Personal Account Manager (PAM).
- Go to Loyola's Personal Account Manager (PAM).
- Enter your UVID in User Name field. Your correct context will appear after your UVID like this: fbear5.highered.ls.loyola. For example, the correct context for User "fbear5" is "highered.ls.loyola".
Understanding Your Drives
Once you have logged in to the server, you can access your personal drive (U, any shared drives or department drives, network printers, any programs that run from your server. If you DO not see any network drives under “My Computer”, you are not logged into the system correctly but only to your local workstation. You still have access to your programs that are locally installed. On your computer at home, you are used to having a few drives. Typically, you will have a C: drive, which is your main data drive, a D: drive, which is usually the CD-ROM or DVD drive, and an A: drive, which is the floppy drive. In a networked system, you will have many more drives!
LOCAL DRIVES
Local drives are attached directly to the machine in front of you. The Loyola local drives are partitioned, so the drives are different than the ones you see on your home computer. The data in the local drives are not backed up.
C: Local Disk. This is the main hard drive inside the computer. This contains system files. You should NOT save documents to this disk.
D: Data. This is a local drive that is actually part of your C: drive. It is called a partition. This is where your “My Documents” folder resides and all of your settings are stored.
E: This is the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
A: This is the computer's floppy disk drive.
NETWORK DRIVES
Access to network drives allows you to save data on the university server system. The network drives can only be accessed after you have logged in successfully to the Novell network. You can save files to these drives just as you would save files on your Loyola desktop computer. The benefits of saving your files on the network drives are twofold: nightly back up of your files and access to these drives over the network from any computer on the Loyola system, e.g., your Loyola desktop, a computing lab machine, etc. These drives are mapped automatically when you login.
There are three basic network drives that you should be aware of:
Your Department Shared Drive:
![]()
N:SHAREDL1\DATA\YOURDEPARTMENTNAME\SHARED
The N drive is used as a department shared drive. This space is intended to help you store and share files with other people in your department. This drive is private and therefore accessible only to the specific people in your department. However, if you have data that is confidential, e.g., research data or personnel data, and should only be accessible to you and/or the people involved in your project, do not store it on this drive as any member of your department could access the data.
Your Private Drive:
![]()
U: SHAREDL1\DATA\LOGIN_NAME
When you login, you will see a drive labeled with your Universal ID (UVID). This is your private drive. It serves as your own personal network storage space that cannot be accessed by anyone else. This is where you would store confidential data.
System Drive:
![]()
T: PROGRAMS at LOYOLARES
This drive is used to store system files that are linked with software programs that run on your computer. Usually you will not need to access this drive. However, there are some instances in which you might need to get to files on this drive, e.g., if you need the sample files that come with some software applications. For instance, all SPSS sample datasets are located on T:\Wintapps\SPSS13\.
These are the basic drives available to most faculty and staff members. Additional drives can be added by mapping a drive to your machine. For help in mapping a different drive to your machine, you can contact the Technology Support Center at 4-4444.
