What is the PC Refresh Program?
The goal of the initial phase of the program is to replace any networked computers that fall below minimum requirements. It is projected that this year over 600 machines will fall into that category. During phase II of the program, replacement requests from across the University will be reviewed and implemented as deemed necessary.
Which computers are covered in the program?
All networked PCs, including lab and electronic classroom computers. Computers that fall under the current minimum requirements for a University workstation will be replaced first. At this time the minimum requirements are defined as: 1.06GHz processor, 256MB RAM, and 10GB hard drive. This program is for University owned PCs only. Grant machines are excluded from this program.
What kind of computer will I get?
The current standard recommendation (vanilla) for departmental purchases is a Dell 745 Opti Plex. This updated configuration eliminates both the additional sound card and video card and adds a DVDRW/CD Combo drive, a 128MB USB memory key, an optical mouse, and a 17" flat panel monitor. Details can be found here.
Why does everyone get the same computer?
Maintaining a level of standardization across the University allows us to reduce support costs, maintain network reliability, and reap the benefits of volume discounts negotiated by the University. Standardization also aids in delivering shorter service response times because the support staff is familiar with the equipment.
Can I get a laptop instead? Or a MAC?
We recognize that the desktop configuration we have chosen may not meet the evolving technology needs of a small segment of faculty and staff. Requests for non-standard computer equipment should be submitted to Information Technology & Serives through the Hardware/Software Review Form. Requests will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Approved requests should then be directed to the Office of the Provost.
What will happen to my old computer?
Replaced computers will be removed from your department as they are replaced. Useable computers will be redeployed within the University, not necessarily within the same department. Computers not redeployed at the University will be disposed of according to EPA regulations.
Can you donate old computers to the charity of my choice?
Unfortunately, we cannot provide these services. In order to ensure the safe and secure removal of old computer equipment, and to make the best use of our resources, we will continue to dispose of replaced computers in accordance with EPA regulations.
When will my new computer arrive?
A firm timetable has not yet been set. Deans and department heads will receive a detailed list of computers in their departments targeted for replacement, including the workstation location and user's name. Computers used by full-time faculty and staff will be replaced first. Watch this Web page for further information.
What do I need to do to get ready for my new computer?
Individuals receiving a new workstation will receive instructions outlining steps they can take to facilitate the installation process. The instructions can also be viewed here. Loyolans receiving new workstations will be contacted in advance to schedule an appointment.
