Security Bulletin - June 10, 2005

Be alert for virus and phishing attacks!

A number of email messages are currently circulating that pretend to be from different @luc.edu addresses, such as webmaster@luc.edu, security-alerts@luc.edu, and others. These messages contain links to click or attachments to open. DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS OR OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS!

Any official communications from Loyola will be sent from official university mailboxes such as "Announcements", "UMC", and "Public Affairs" only; legit messages also ends with a staff name and internal contact information or often ends with a note indicating "not to reply to the message." If you have any questions about the validity of any broadcast message, please contact the ITS Support Center at 4-4444 or 773-508-7190.

The few minutes you spend on the phone is an extremely minor inconvenience compared to the possible loss of personal information, damage to your computer's files, or the several hours it may take to restore your computer to its previous state. Also, if you have clicked a link or opened an attachment from a suspicious file, please call the ITS Support Center immediately to schedule a time for a technician to come out and verify that your machine is virus-free or remove any viruses that are found.
