Student Competitions: Chicago Bar Association Moot Court Competition

Sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Chicago Bar Association, this competition consists of mock appellate argument before the Supreme Court of the United States. Among recent topics: whether an extra-jurisdictional arrest performed by a security officer violated the Fourth Amendment; whether a state could broadcast the execution of a condemned prisoner live over the internet; and whether such a broadcast violated the First Amendment rights of the prisoner; and whether the Safer Schools Anti-Terrorism Act, which banned the possession of certain items on school grounds, was constitutional.

The CBA Team competed November 8, 9 and 10, 2007 at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago. 32 teams from 16 different schools across the nation participated in the competition. Loyola competed in three preliminary rounds between Thursday and Friday. On Friday they tallied the scores from the prelim rounds and the top 16 teams faced off in the octofinal round. Both LUC teams made the cut to 16 and competed in the octofinal. They cut the field to 8. Neither LUC team made it to the field of 8. Loyola is proud of the team's great work!
