ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The Loyola University Chicago Law Journal will host "The Future of Class Actions and Its Alternatives," an academic symposium addressing class actions, mass settlement funds, and the growth of arbitration in collective litigation, on April 13, 2012. The conference will examine how collective litigation is changing both in the United States and abroad. Panelists will discuss how statutory changes and court decisions are narrowing class actions in the United States and how collective litigation can be designed abroad to avoid what many international jurisdictions perceive as the excesses of the American system. Futhermore, panelists will consider the growing role of arbitration as a means of addressing class action litigation.
The Law Journal is pleased to announce Kenneth R. Feinberg as the keynote speaker. Mr. Feinberg has significant professional experience in mass litigation matters. He is best known for serving as special master of the federal September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, which distributed nearly $7 billion to more than 5,000 victims and families of victims of the 9/11 terroist attacks. Mr. Feinberg has also served as administrator for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, set up for the benefit of victims' families in the wake of the 2007 Virginia Tech mass shooting, and as head of the BP Claims Fund, a $20 billion escrow account for damage claims from the massive BP oil spill in 2010. Mr. Feinberg has also mediated several high profile cases, including a class action by 250,000 Vietnam veterans and their families against the manufacturers of Agent Orange.
