Law Journal Conference

Beginning in 2001, the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal has hosted an annual conference on a topic of current and continuing significance in the legal community. The next conference is "Taxes in Liberal Democracies: Exploring the Relationship between Tax Law and Good Governance" and will take place on March 14, 2008, at the law center. It is the goal of the Law Journal to host a conference that not only has great educational value for Loyola students, but that also has an appeal in the legal community at large. To this end, the Taxes in Liberal Democracies conference will cover the current issues related to the main topic including: the alternative minimum tax, tax law and equality of wealth, private equity tax reform, and tax collection and enforcement.

Past conference subjects have included "Law and Religion"; "Bush v. Gore One Year Later: A Constitutional Retrospective"; "Technology and Governance: How the Internet Has Changed Our Conceptions of Governance and Institutions"; "Race in Education Policy: A Constitutional Examination"; "Death and Dying: An Examination of End of Life Issues 30 Years after Quinlan"; "The Constitutional and Legal Issues Presented by Same Sex Relationships"; and "Checks and Balances Today: The Reality of Separation of Powers."

Law Journal Conference:

Taxes in a Liberal Democracy: Exploring the Relationship between Tax Law and Good Governance.

March 14, 2008
Rubloff Auditorium
25 E. Pearson St., Chicago, Illinois

This one-day conference will provide a forum for nationally recognized scholars to come together with practicing lawyers, judges, and students to discuss the balance between taxation and democratic ideals.  More specifically, this conference will explore the use of tax law for the redistribution of wealth, the factors affecting tax policy formation and implementation, and recent developments in the tax on mass versus the tax on class, including the alternative minimum tax and private equity. This program has been approved by the Illinois MCLE Board for 4.5 hours of credit.  For advanced registration and information, please contact Kirsten Housing, symposium editor, at khousin@luc.edu or (312) 915-7183.
