Public Interest Law Convocation and Award

Begun in 1989 as part of a professionalism project undertaken with the American Bar Association, the law school hosts an annual Convocation to recognize outstanding achievements in public service and pro bono service by members of the bar. Attendance at the Convocation is required for all first-year students, full-time and part-time, as a part of the law school's goal of acquainting all students with the unmet legal needs of the poor and with the obligation of all lawyers to address that critical societal need.

An award is presented at the Convocation to one or more legal professionals who have devoted their career to helping the under-represented. In most years, a comparable award is presented to another lawyer who has provided substantial pro bono services to the community and to the profession.
