The Student Bar Association (SBA) is a student run organization. The function of SBA is, in part, to facilitate social and charitable activities that encourage perspective and balance in a law student's otherwise busy life.
First year student representatives for the SBA are elected at the beginning of each school year. 2L and 3L Student Executive Officers are elected at the end of each school year. Both the Executive Officers and the first year student representatives work together to create a calendar of events for the entire student body of the law school.
With the help of the admissions office, the SBA coordinates the Big Sib/Little Sib program set to begin during the Fundamentals course. During first semester SBA typically schedules Thursday night bar parties, a boat cruise in Lake Michigan, a Halloween Party, charitable events such as Hunger Week (and a "No-Talent Show") and blood drives, trips to the Chicago Food Depository, and a Finals' party. Much of second semester is spent planning, among other things, the annual Barrister's Ball, where students and faculty attend a black tie event, complete with dinner, drinks and an incredible night out.
The SBA also serves as a liaison between students and faculty when there are pressing issues that the student body would like to see addressed. During the current year, the SBA will host several Deans' Roundtable Discussions, where students are invited to come talk openly with the Deans of the law school about various concerns and observations they are interested in sharing.
The SBA is open to suggestions regarding event planning, charity work, and general concerns of the student body as well. It is the SBA's primary concern that the unique law school environment at Loyola is preserved, in the sense that (to whatever extent possible) the stress level is low, and the mood of the student body is positive and responsive.
