Chicago Bar Foundation

Scholarship: Kimball R. Anderson and Karen Gatsis Anderson Public Interest Law Fellowship

Description: The CBF first awarded the fellowship in 2003 and now awards a single $50,000 fellowship each year to an individual who demonstrates the following: (1) a commitment to public interest work (2) academic excellence in law school, and (3) outstanding character and integrity. Fellowship funds are awarded in ten installments of $5,000 over five years, contingent on continued compliance with the terms of the fellowship.

Scholarship: The Chicago Bar Foundation Sun-Times Public Interest Law Fellowship Program

Description: The CBF will award five (5) five-year fellowships every year over a period of ten years to 50 outstanding young attorneys who have chosen to pursue careers in legal aid or public interest law at a CBF-funded organization or at a qualifying legal aid organization serving other parts of Illinois. Each fellow will receive a total of up to $50,000 of loan repayment assistance during their five-year fellowship. One fellowship each year may be awarded to legal aid attorneys who serve Illinois residents outside of Cook County. This Fellowship Program is available to young attorneys who commit to work full time for minimum of five years at a CBF-funded legal aid organization or, for a limited number of recipients, a qualifying legal aid organization outside of Cook County (a list of these organizations is included with the Fellowship applications) and who otherwise meet the Fellowship Program guidelines.

Scholarship: Illinois Bar Foundation Scholarship

Description: Consistent with its goal to promote the study of law, the Illinois Bar Foundation expects to award a scholarship in the amount of $3000 to one qualified law student from each of the thirteen local law schools.  Each scholarship recipient will be 2nd or 3rd year student who has demonstrated an accomplished academic record, participants in diverse extracurricular and community activities and demonstrates financial need.  Preference is given to student members of the Illinois State Bar Association and those who plan to practice in Illinois.

Description: Scholars receive up to $50,000 per year to pursue a graduate or professional degree.  To be eligible, you must be a college senior, enroll full-time in a graduate program, and have a B average.  Students must be officially nominated by their undergraduate Office of Financial Aid.

 The Cook County Pubic Defenders Jack Carey Scholarship

The scholarship requires a commitment as an intern or extern at the Cook County Public Defender’s Office for one semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer).

The scholarship is available only to those law students eligible for a license pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 (i.e., 2nd and 3rd year students only).  A total of three scholarship stipends, each in the amount of $2,000, will be awarded every school year (one per semester).

LAGBAC Foundation

Scholarship: 2008 Summer Scholarship Grant ApplicationDescription: The Foundation will award scholarship grants ranging from $3000 to $4000 to support full-time, summer employment with a qualified public interest organization. Scholarship grant recipients will be required to complete 300-400 hours over a 10 week period.

Law School Vets
 
Scholarship: The Military and Veterans Benefits Scholarship
Description: Each August, the Military and Veterans Benefits Scholarship Program awards three $2,000 scholarships to 2L or 3L law school students.  Qualifying applicants include any student accepted to an accredited law school program, full-time for the associated Fall semester.  Students must also have served in a branch of the Armed Forces, or be concurrently involved with a branch of the Armed Forces. These may include: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Reserve, Marines and ancillary departments and programs.

Scholarship: The Moses Scholarship

Description: The Moses Fellowship is intended to support an individual who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation the individual will be best prepared to pursue a public interest legal career. The fellowship provides funds for public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt burden as possible. The fellowship is awarded for a consecutive three year period to the six Chicago area law schools by rotation (Chicago-Kent, DePaul, John Marshall, Loyola, Northwestern, University of Chicago). These funds enable an incoming full-time public interest scholar to have a significant portion of his or her tuition covered by fellowship funding through CBF. Contingent on the recipient’s continued compliance with the terms of the fellowship, the student will receive $10,000 in the first year, $15,000 in the second year, and $20,000 in the third year of law school.

The CBF does not accept applications for the Moses Fellowships. Every three years, the Moses Fellowship rotates to a different Chicago-area law school and the law school’s administration selects the fellowship recipient.

 National Bar Institute

Scholarship:  African American Law Student Fellowship

The National Bar Institute African American Law Student Fellowship Program invites applications from law students who:

§ Have demonstrated a commitment to creating equality and justice for African Americans through work in their law schools, their neighborhoods and community;

§ Are U.S. citizens or permanent residents;

§ Are carrying a full-time class load at an accredited U.S. law school;

§ Have at least two consecutive years of full-time law student experience and will complete graduation requirements within two semesters;

§ Intend to return to a Black community to practice law once their legal training is completed.

African American law students in all areas of law are encouraged to apply. Fellowships range from $1000 to $10,000 depending on the availability of funds. It is understood that in many cases the fellowship award will be supplemented by other sources of income, and we encourage all candidates to seek other funding sources.

Scholarship: Nordic Law Club Scholarship

Description: The Nordic Law Club has been a professional and social organization for lawyers for over seventy years.  According to legend, it was originally dubbed The Horned Helmet Drinking Society and began as a social club for lawyers of Scandinavian heritage.  The club has since relaxed membership requirements to include anyone whose homeland was the site of a Viking raid, who has attended a Victor Borge or ABBA concert, who has seen the movie "The Vikings" at least once, or who is acquainted with an individual in one of the above categories.  Applicants should submit a letter of application to the law school financial aid office by 5pm.  Selections are made based on merit and financial need.  Applicants should be entering their final year of law school and have demonstrated an interest in international law issues.

Scholarship: 2007-2008 Law Student Essay Contest

Scholarship: The Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship

Description: The Marovitz Scholarship is awarded annually to a student attending one of the nine Illinois law schools. These funds, payable over a three-year period, enable an incoming student who intends to pursue a career in public interest law to have a significant portion of his or her tuition and related expenses covered by Scholarship funding. Scholarship: The Darleen J. and Robert L. Walker Scholarship Fund

Description:  Under the terms of the scholarship, preference will be given to a son or daughter of a member of Masonic Lodge 1098 in Lombard, Illinois, or to former residents of the Masonic Children's Home in La Grange, Illinois, and those who come from Masonic families. Scholarships may be renewed upon verification of continued financial need and continued good standing at the law school.
