Scholarships and Fellowships for Upperclass Students
ATTENTION: Each of the scholarships and fellowships applications listed under "Loyola Scholarship Opportunities" should be accompanied by a cover letter addressed to the respective committee. The letter should list what items you are submitting, i.e. if the scholarship requires a resume or an essay be sure to put that you are submitting one in your cover letter. Resumes should include rank and GPA where appropriate.

academic year.
Please read the instructions carefully and peruse the scholarship criteria both to ascertain if you are eligible for the scholarships, and to determine what documents are required for each scholarship.
General Instructions:
- A cover letter must be submitted including the name of the scholarship to which you are applying, and the name of the recommender, if applicable.
- If you are applying for more than one scholarship, a separate cover letter and resume must be submitted for each scholarship.
- All scholarship applications require the inclusion of a current resume.
- Please read carefully for other required documents.
- NOTE: If the scholarship listing includes "show financial need", we must receive the results of the FAFSA by the prescribed deadline of April 1. The Financial Assistance Office will provide the "need quotient" from the FAFSA results to the selection committee(s)
- Some of the scholarships require a nomination letter from a faculty member. The letter should be addressed to the Named Scholarship Committee, and forwarded to Dean Bloomquist by the deadline, unless otherwise noted. It is your responsibility as an applicant to ensure the timely arrival of the nomination/recommendation letter(s) and transcript(s).
- All documents required for each scholarship must be received by the deadline in the Law Admission/Financial Aid Office unless otherwise noted.
Loyola Scholarship Opportunities
- Annals of Health Law Editing Scholarships
For J.D. students. Each year, the Institute awards two scholarships to the J.D. students who are selected to serve as the editor-in-chief and managing editor of the student-run publication, Annals of Health Law. A $500 scholarship for one year, awarded to baptized Roman Catholic students who demonstrate achievements in academic and extracurricular activities, show financial need. Baptism certificate or proof of membership in Catholic Church required. - Class of 1967 Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding third year student based on academic success. - Joan Marie Corboy Scholarship
A $10,000 scholarship, awarded to one student who has demonstrated leadership qualities and who has displayed superior ability in trial advocacy. Recipient may be a second or third year student. If a second year student is named recipient, student may reapply for his or her third year of law school. Requires an essay of 500 words stating reasons why candidate should be selected and a letter of recommendation from faculty/staff supporting trial advocacy skills and leadership qualities. - Sidney DeLove Scholarship
Awarded to upperclass students with high academic success and financial need. - Judge Loretta C. Douglas Endowed Scholarship for Women in the Bernstein Scholars Program
A $500 award, given to a female in good academic standing entering the third or final year. Applicants must show financial need. -
David L. Hartigan ScholarshipThis scholarship was established in memory of David L. Hartigan who was the son of Neil Hartigan, an alumnus of Loyola University Chicago School of Law. This scholarship is given annually each spring to a promising third year day student who exhibits both academic achievement, financial need and a commitment to public service.
- William F. and Kathleen Hynes Scholarship
The candidate must be a part-time student in their third year to receive the scholarship in their fourth year. Either presently employed in Chicago as a police officer or fire fighter, OR the natural or adopted son or daughter of a current or retired Chicago police officer or fire fighter. A letter from the appropriate police or fire department is required. This letter must state the individual, either the applicant or his/her parent is a member of the department in good standing. In the case of retired police officers or fire fighters the letter must indicate that he/she left the department in good standing. This letter must be received by April 1 for all candidates wishing to be considered. - Keeshin Scholarship: Awarded to editor-in-chief of Law Journal.
- William L. Lamey Scholarship
A $500 scholarship, awarded to students who demonstrate interest in commercial or business law, and show financial need. Requires official copy of a law school transcript and letter of support from faculty who has taught student in commercial and/or business law class(es). - Law Alumni Scholarship
Awarded to highest-ranked second-year student(s) not current scholarship recipient. - F. Emmet Morrissey Scholarship
Awarded to highest-ranked third-year student who is not a current scholarship recipient. - The Michael J. Perona Memorial Scholarship
This fund was created in 2003 by Julia E. Jensen for the law school to assist students in pursuing their legal education. The scholarship is intended to assist a student who is a resident of Illinois and who expresses a desire to practice law in Illinois. The student will be a second or third year, full-time law student with need (completed FAFSA required) and the student's class rank will be in the lower 75%. Each applicant must write an essay demonstrating a strong work ethic and an interest in a trial practice career. Please provide the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Suite 1440, a resume and essay.
- The John J. Piderit, S.J./Theodore G. Munz, S.J./Loyola Academy Scholarship
A $500 scholarship, awarded to a full-time student who demonstrates exceptional academic performance, by submission of official transcript. Applicants must be a graduate of Loyola Academy (copy of the diploma is required) and show financial need. - Powers, Rogers & Smith Endowed Scholarship
A $2,500 scholarship, awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in equal access to justice. Students must show financial need, provide a letter of nomination from faculty supporting equal access to justice and provide an official transcript. - The Ribbeck Scholarship
The Ribbeck Law Scholarship is funded by a donation to the law school from Ms. Monica R. Kelly, a 1994 School of Law Alumnus, to assist students in pursuing their legal education. The criteria for the scholarship is that the student is bilingual in English and Spanish and have demonstrated financial need (i.e., has completed the FAFSA). Please provide the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Suite 1440, a letter of interest and a resume.
- Barney & Angela Richards Scholarship $500
A $500 scholarship, awarded to a student who completes a course in labor law and can show financial need and academic merit (official transcript required). Preference is given to a student who is a member of a labor union or whose parent(s) joined a labor union (documentation required). A letter of support from labor law professor is required. - Schiff, Hardin & Waite/John J. Waldron Scholarship
A $3,500 scholarship, awarded to a minority student attending classes on a full-time basis who during his or her first year of law school has demonstrated exceptional academic performance and exceptional personal character. Open to current 1Ls (Fall, 2004-Spring 2005).
Factors to be considered in determining exceptional academic performance may include, but not be limited to a GPA in the top 10 percent of the class (determination made after Spring grades). Factors to be considered in determining exceptional personal character may include, but not be limited to: a demonstrated record of community service; involvement with charitable, civic, professional or student organizations; involvement in law school extracurricular activities; maintenance of high moral standards. Applicants must supply a letter of support from one faculty member teaching substantive law class. - Harold Siegan Scholarship
Awarded to upperclass students of the Jewish faith with financial need. - Harold Siegan-Decalogue Scholarship
Awarded to upperclass student of the Jewish faith with high academic success. - Sophie Swienton Endowed Scholarship
A $5,000 scholarship, to be shared among 2-3 American citizens of Polish descent (documentation required). Students must demonstrate academic and extracurricular achievements, as well as financial need. -
Thomas P. Sullivan ScholarshipThis scholarship was established in memory of Thomas P. Sullivan by the law firm of Jenner and Block. This scholarship is given annually each spring to a promising second or third year day student who exhibits both academic achievement, financial need and a commitment to public service.
- Anthony Teresi Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding part-time student after second year. - The Laura Terlizzi Scholarship
A $500 scholarship, open to a woman student who has successfully completed Loyola's Intellectual Property course. Candidates must have the stated intention to practice in the intellectual property area, preferably patent law, as well as supply a letter of support from faculty member who taught Intellectual Property course. Preference is given to prior work experience relevant to intellectual property law.
Fellowships
- Edna D. Bowens Fellowship: Awarded to the editors of the Consumer Law Review
- Consumer Antitrust Fellowship: Awarded to outstanding incoming first-year students, aswell as students in the top third of their class after their first year interested in antitrust, consumer protection, regulated industries, political economy
- Cooney-Conway Fellowship: Four $5,000 one-year fellowships, open to a full-time day student/part-time evening student entering final year of study in Fall, 2005. Applicants must show financial need, have completed (or will be enrolled in their final year) a course in trial practice and/or trial advocacy and have an interest in litigation. Requires letter of nomination from faculty/staff involved in moot court, mock trial, advocacy or trial practice course(s) and an essay of 500 words indicating their interest and strengths in trial practice/advocacy.
- Philip H. Corboy Fellows: 10 Fellowships available to students selected for various Loyola Trial Teams
- Hartigan Fellowship: Awarded to a student to work in Public Interest law section of Career Resources
- Curt N. Rodin Fellows: Two Fellowships to participate in competition programs
- Public Interest Law Society: 7-8 stipends awards for summer internships in Public Interest/Public Service Law
- Russo Fellows: Awarded to the editors of the Law Journal
- Salisbury Summer Externship: Awarded to students participating in summer externships in Public Interest Law
