About

Robert John Kane, J.D., is Chief Legal Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for the Illinois State Medical Society and ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company having previously served as Vice-President and Chief Compliance Officer and Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel. Mr. Kane was formerly Associate Legal Counsel to Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where he also served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medical Jurisprudence. Mr. Kane is certified as a Health Care Privacy Professional (CHPC) and as a Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP). He holds adjunct faculty rank at SIU School of Medicine, Department of Medical Humanities and the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy, Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He has held adjunct faculty rank in the Health Science Administration program at Sangamon State University in Springfield and has served as Adjunct Professor of Health Law for the Health Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. Mr. Kane is a graduate of Marquette University and DePaul University College of Law.

Mr. Kane formerly served on the boards of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, the Government Bar Association, and the Illinois Advisory Board for the Michie Company. He has served on various legal committees, boards, and panels including the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) Health Care Section Council, the ISBA Administrative Law Section Council, and the ISBA Committee for Recodification of Illinois Statutes. Mr. Kane also served on the Professional Activities Committee of the Government Bar Association.

Mr. Kane holds membership in the, the American Society of Medical Association Counsel, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Government Bar Association, and the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys. He has served as editor of the IAHA Annual Survey of Health Law for 25 years. He has been a co-author of this treatise since 1989. He has written and spoken on various issues in health and administrative law, and is author of Administrative Rulemaking in Illinois: A Handbook for Rulemakers and Practitioners (Center for Legal Studies, Sangamon State University, 2d ed. 1990), reprint in chapter form by the ISBA in 2001, 2008 and 2023.
