John E. Nowak Raymond and Mary Simon Chair in Constitutional Law
Biography John E. Nowak is the first professor to hold the Raymond and Mary Simon Chair in Constitutional Law at Loyola. He graduated from Marquette University and the University of Illinois College of Law. After clerking for the late Justice Walter Schaefer of the Illinois Supreme Court, he joined the Illinois faculty in 1972. He was the David C. Baum professor for nine of his years on the Illinois faculty. Professor Nowak joined the Loyola law faculty in July 2008. Professor Nowak is the author, or coauthor, of more than a score of law review articles and several books on constitutional law topics. With Professor Ronald D. Rotunda, Jenner Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois, he has authored: Concise Hornbook on Constitutional Law (3rd edition, Thomson-West 2007); Constitutional Law (7th edition, Thomson-West 2004 ); and the six-volume Treatise on Constitutional Law: Substance and Procedure (4th edition, Thomson-West 2007-08). Professors Nowak and Rotunda are also the editors of Story's Commentaries on the Constitution (1987, Carolina Academic Press) Professor Nowak has been a scholar in residence at the University of Arizona; a visiting professor at the University of Michigan; the Lee Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of William and Mary, and the Williams Visiting Professor at the University of Richmond. He has presented lectures at variety of law schools; the National Conference of Law Reviews annual meeting; constitutional law programs and conferences sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools; and at Federal Judicial Center programs across the United States, including the Judicial Center's Canada-United States Legal Exchange. Professor Nowak has served as a member of the Selection Committee for Order of the Coif Triennial Book Award; a member of the Accreditation Committee of the Association of American Law Schools; and as the chairperson of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Constitutional Law. He has been a member of the American Law Institute since 1984. For a decade, Professor Nowak served as the University of Illinois Faculty Athletic Representative to the Big Ten Conference and NCAA. During that time, he also served as a member of the NCAA Committee on Infractions.
