Important Information for Faculty: Class Enrollment

Can I let students into my class who are not on my class list?

Registration is a stressful time for all of us. Sometimes students are locked out of a class because the class fills to capacity. Class capacity is determined either by the size of the room or by the teacher who may, prior to registration, set a limit on the number of students he or she wants. Normally, we don't permit a class enrollment to exceed 74.

Students position themselves to get the courses they want, with the teacher they want, at the time they want. They have work schedules, they have play schedules, they have good equities and not so good equities. If your course fills up to capacity, PLEASE...no matter how hard they beg...no matter what story they tell you...don't tell students that you can get them into your class. This will embarrass all of us. Our on-line registration does not allow a student to get into a course through the "side door" (by seeking teacher permission) which is unfair to students who take "no" for an answer and move on to their next choice. Obviously, we occasionally make exceptions for extraordinary situations, but please let us make those calls. For every student with a good story, there are usually ten others with equal or greater equities.

At the beginning of each semester, full-time faculty download their class rosters off the Web, via LOCUS. Class rosters for part-time faculty will be prepared by the Registrar, Dora Jacks, and left in part-time faculty mailboxes in room 1301. It is important that all faculty follow carefully the Registrar's instructions about verifying students' registration and notifying her office about any problems.
