LLM candidates must complete 21 hours of course work and a 3-credit LLM thesis. The degree may be pursued on a full-time (one year) or part-time (two-year) basis. The LLM course of study includes four required courses: Child, Parent and State, Interdisciplinary Child Law Seminar, Child Law Trial Practice, and Child Law Legislation. The remaining course work consists of electives chosen on the basis of a candidate's area of interest.

In addition to formal courses, attorneys may represent child clients through the Child Law Clinic and assist in the editing of the Children's Legal Rights Journal, a journal produced jointly between Loyola and the American Bar Association Center on Children and the Law. Externship opportunities are available in Chicago's large child advocacy community. Candidates are able to meet local and national leaders in children's advocacy through a bi-weekly symposia series sponsored by Loyola's Child Law Center.
