Lester Finkle is an Assistant Public Defender with the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender in Chicago. He joined that office in 1984, where he initially was assigned to represent parents accused of abusing and/or neglecting their children. He subsequently represented minor clients charged with delinquent offenses, adults charged with felonies, and all manner of criminal appeals, including clients who were sentenced to death. Lester is Chief within the Legal Resources Division of the Public Defender, where he supervises attorneys who handle appeals and post-conviction cases. Lester has argued five times before the Illinois Supreme Court, and over 50 times before the appellate courts of Illinois. During his tenure as an Assistant Public Defender, Lester has also taught on a volunteer basis within the Cook County Jail, where he helped women with children who faced criminal charges understand their situation and the consequences on their families. In addition, since 1997, Lester has taught legal writing and appellate advocacy classes at other institutions on a part-time basis.
