Electronic Acquisitions - January 2007

Home > Recent Acquisitions > Electronic Acquisitions - January 2007

After a nice year-end break from classes and, hopefully, stress, it is time once again to explore recent additions and enhancements made to the Law Library?s collection of electronic resources. Even in the waning weeks of 2006, the databases available through our Westlaw, LexisNexis, and HeinOnline subscriptions increased in number and variety, and the Law Library also expanded its BNA subscription. Some highlights of those additions and enhancements are listed below.

To kick off the new year, the Law Library also improved its own webpage of Subscription Databases (http://www.luc.edu/law/library/resources.shtml). Links (marked by blue question mark icons) have been added that lead to a page of short descriptions about what each subscription or database contains. If you have any comments or questions about anything listed there, please contact Patricia Scott, the Law Library?s Reference and Electronic Services Librarian, at pscott2@luc.edu, or at x5-8515.

BNA ? International Trade Reporter

Last month, the Law Library expanded its BNA electronic collection by subscribing to the International Trade Reporter. This weekly publication contains comprehensive coverage, with analysis, of business developments, legislation and case law that impact the trade and international business policies of the United States and its trading partners. An archive of issues dating back to January of 1996 is included in the subscription. In addition to accessing the reporter through our Subscription Databases page, law students and faculty can sign up for weekly email updates by filling out a form on our website, at http://www.luc.edu/law/library/forms/bna.shtml.

CALI (Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction)

A number of lessons were added to our CALI subscription during the winter months, and many of them relate to topics in Family Law. Examples include: Constitutional Aspects of Family Law; Custody Disputes; and Distribution of Property at Divorce. CALI lessons, which are authored by law professors, offer an interactive option for studying. To access the lessons, students and faculty must obtain our school?s authorization code, which is necessary for the registration process. To get the code, contact Patricia Scott, the Law Library?s Reference and Electronic Services Librarian, at pscott2@luc.edu or (312) 915-8515. A complete list of lessons added in 2006 is available on CALI?s website, at http://www2.cali.org/index.php?fuseaction=lessons.newlessons.

HeinOnline

Having recovered from the late-2006 addition of the historical Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) to its holdings, HeinOnline began the new year by completing indexing to the Part level for its entire CFR collection, through 1983. The Title and Quick Part Locator search function is now available for all CFR content in the collection.
Other new enhancements include the addition of a navigation trail feature, in blue at the top of each HeinOnline document page, to orient researchers within the collections, and increased highlighting of search terms within sets of search results from select libraries.

At the same time, Hein has been adding content at its usual brisk pace. Among the 50 new titles in the Law Journal Library is Mersky and Dunn?s Index to Periodical Articles Related to Law, a valuable resource for those interested in the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of legal research. The index includes citations to articles published in journals that are not covered in traditional indexes of law-related articles.

Other new titles in the Law Journal Library include:

Boston College Intellectual Property and Technology Forum, Vols. 1997-2006
Elder Law Journal, Vols. 1-13 (1993-2005)
Journal of Corporate Law Studies, Vols. 1-4 (2001-2004)
Journal of the Legal Profession, Vols. 1-29 (1976-2005)
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property, Vols. 1-4 (2003-2006)
Sports Lawyers Journal, Vols. 1-13 (1994-2006)
Suffolk Transnational Law Review, Vols. 1-28 (1977-2005)

As these titles show, a wide variety of journal articles are available, in downloadable PDF format, within HeinOnline?s collection. New titles ? including 192 in last month?s release - also are being rapidly added to the Legal Classics Library.

Complete lists of recent additions to the HeinOnline libraries are available on Hein?s website, at http://www.heinonline.org/front/front-whatsnew

LexisNexis

LexisNexis continued adding news, business, and international (primarily Canadian and UK) databases at a rapid clip at the end of 2006. Among the news sources added in recent months were a few for those who needed a holiday break from scholarly reading: Esquire (ESQUIR) and Popular Mechanics (POPMCH).

Other interesting and useful database additions include:

2005 Burns ? Indiana Code Annotated (IN2005)
A Practical Guide to Outsourcing Agreements (by Matthew Bender) (PRACOA)
Business Intelligence Review (BIREVW)
E&E News PM (energy/environmental policy news) (EENWPM)
FDA Advisory Committee Hearings (FDAHRG)
Journal of Animal Law and Ethics (JANLET)
Stanford Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (SJCRCL)

For a complete list of LexisNexis? recently added and updated databases see http://www.lexisnexis.com/infopro/current/sources/. Most databases listed there are included in our law school subscription.

Westlaw

The last months of 2006 also saw a number of database additions and enhancements in Westlaw. Treatises, including several focused on practical issues involved in filing cases and bringing them to trial, made up a significant part of the additions. Examples of those new treatises include:

Durable Powers of Attorney and Health Care Directives (DURPOA)
Handling Misdemeanor Cases (HANDMISD)
Information Sec. and Privacy: A Practical Guide to Fed., State & Intl. Law (INFOSECP)
Law of Sentencing (LAWSENT)
Navigating the Federal Trial (NAVFEDT)
Winning Evidence Arguments (WINEVID)

Other recently added databases include:

Federal Evidence Cases (FEV-CS)
Iraq Study Group Report (IRAQRPT)
Multistate Evidence Cases (MEV-CS)

Westlaw also rolled out a new Alert Center Summary feature to organize all alerts, or automatic notifications of new results on a specified search, associated with a password. Located under the ?Alert Center? link at the top right of the Westlaw screen, the new summary screen gathers information on several types of alerts, including WestClips and Key Cite Alerts.

A complete list of recent additions and content changes to Westlaw is available at http://west.thomson.com/newsletters/westelert/2006_NovDec/copy5.aspx. Most databases listed there are available under our subscription.
