Electronic Acquistions - March 2007
Home > Recent Acquisitions > Electronic Acquisitions - March 2007
March was one of the Law Library?s busiest months ever for electronic acquisitions. We added subscriptions to 4 new BNA databases, to 2 HeinOnline databases, and to CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online), which is full of terrific resources for international research. Read more, below, about those additions, and also peruse some samples from the new databases available under our LexisNexis and Westlaw subscriptions.
Remember: a complete list of the electronic databases and services to which we subscribe is available at http://www.luc.edu/law/library/resources.shtml. If you have any questions about what you see there, contact Patricia Scott, the Law Library?s Reference and Electronic Services Librarian, at pscott2@luc.edu, or at x5-8515.
BNA
BNA titles are rapidly becoming a significant part of our electronic collection, and all are available via links from our Subscription Databases webpage (see above). If you are a Loyola Law faculty member or student you can also sign up to receive email notifications for many of the products: http://www.luc.edu/law/library/forms/bna.shtml. With the addition of 4 new titles, we now subscribe to 9 individual report titles, plus 2 ?libraries? (Intellectual Property and Labor & Employment), and a manual. The March additions, described below, expand our electronic collection into several new legal topic areas, including electronic commerce and environmental law.
If you're researching legal ethics, consider starting with the ABA/BNA Lawyers? Manual on Professional Conduct. Its contents include ABA ethics opinions, summaries of state ethics opinions, links to full-text state ethics opinions, ethics rules, practice guides, and current reports with news and analysis about ethics issues. Indexes and other finding aids for locating relevant rules and opinions are also available to help you locate specific types of material.
The Electronic Commerce and Law Report is a weekly publication that covers major legal issues - federal, state, and international ? relevant to digital communications and transactions. Use it to follow current trends and developments, to see summaries of court decisions and other primary sources, and for links to some related sources. Our subscription includes issues dating back to April, 1996.
The addition of BNA?s Environment Reporter brings a strong environmental presence to our list of Subscription Databases. It?s another weekly report that provides news and analysis about current case law, legislative, regulatory, and policy developments concerning the environment. It originated in 1970, with the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, and issues back to January, 1996 are included in our subscription.
And last, but, certainly not least, the Health Law Reporter. Use this weekly report as a current awareness service to stay abreast of the latest major legal developments affecting the health care industry and to see analysis of significant case law, legislation, regulations, and enforcement trends. Recent issues have covered everything from a possible tax exemption for RHIOs to EMTALA case law. Our subscription contains issues published since early 1996.
CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online)
CIAO is a scholarly source for research into issues involved in international affairs. Materials have both theoretical and practical aspects and the focus is much broader than that of traditional international legal research sources. Contents include working papers, NGO paper series, conference proceedings, research projects, case studies, books, journals and policy briefs. Links to related information sources, such as maps and nation-specific information and a schedule of scholarly events, are also part of the package. CIAO is updated monthly and contains content from 1991 onward. If you are on campus, view a short usage guide at:
http://www.ciaonet.org/_media/CIAO_BrochureLetter.pdf.
HeinOnline
Hot on the heels of the recent introduction of its Session Laws library, HeinOnline introduced two additional components, the English Reports and the Foreign and International Law Resources Database (FILRD), which the Law Library added to its subscription. Content in the new components is available in PDF format, as is usual with HeinOnline.
In the English Reports you will find all 176 volumes of the English Reports, Full Reprint, containing case law issued between 1220 and 1867, which was originally published in a series of ?Old Reports? published by private reporters. An Index of Cases and Index Chart (showing where each volume of the Old Reports was republished in the reprint) are also included in that collection. The Foreign and International Law Resources Database (FILRD) is a wide-ranging collection that contains approximately 675 volumes of international law material. This database is an excellent source for decisions of the Hague Permanent Court of International Justice (from 1923 to 1969) and for historical digests related to international law (ranging from the late nineteenth century to 1980). It also contains a significant number of relevant yearbooks and periodicals.
Continued growth also occurred in existing portions of HeinOnline during the past month. The Legal Classics Library added 20 new titles, and the Law Journal Library added 6 new titles, including Developments in Mental Health Law, Vols. 1-25 (1981-2006). See http://www.heinonline.org/front/front-07update.html for a compilation of all of the recent additions.
