SLD Philosophy

The Department of Student Leadership Development is guided by a philosophy that is values-based and experiental. At Loyola, we believe that a leader:

  • is guided by a sense of purpose and a set of core values
  • serves as a role model by behaving ethically and responsibly, and encouraging others to do the same
  • is committed to seeking and supporting diversity
  • is creative and adaptive, and sees change as an opportunity for growth
  • seeks God in all things by promoting faith, justice and service to others, by understanding that privilege entails moral and ethical obligations, and by making decisions with a commitment to furthering the common good
  • understands multiple leadership models (e.g. collaborative and servant leadership), and draws on them effectively
  • is discerning and able to reflect on, and learn from, experience
  • takes appropriate self-care by setting boundaries and by seeking guidance and assistance
